Jordon Johnson-Rubell, nation's No. 2 safety, names top 5, sets official visits

IMG Academy (Florida) four-star safety Jordon Johnson-Rubell is down to Michigan, Ohio State, TCU, Texas and USC

IMG Academy (Florida) four-star defensive back Jordon Johnson-Rubell, the nation's No. 2 safety and No. 25 overall prospect, is one of the most coveted defenders in America.

The 5-foot-10, 180-pound athlete accumulated 35 scholarship offers during the recruiting process, highlighted by several of the nation's top programs.

On Tuesday, however, Johnson-Rubell trimmed his list down to a final five.

Michigan, Ohio State, TCU, Texas and USC made the cut:

It's an unsurprising update for Johnson-Rubell, who visited his top five schools this calendar year and has already set several official visits.

He confirmed to SBLive Sports that he will be making the following trips in the coming weeks: USC (June 1), Michigan (June 9), Ohio State (June 16) and Texas (June 23).

Notably absent from his top five was Colorado, who the Texas high schooler-turned-IMG Academy student-athlete visited this spring.

Here's what 247Sports had to say, in part, about Johnson-Rubell as a prospect:

" A versatile defensive back that made key plays at key moments as a junior for IMG Academy, like his pick-six against St. Frances Academy. Has been deployed primarily as a safety at the national powerhouse, but has some experience working at cornerback and has shown that he can be rather effective as a slot defender. ...Might be on the smaller side, but plays bigger than the numbers suggest as he’s physical in the hole and comfortable carrying out tasks near the line of scrimmage. Looser hips allow him to mirror pass catchers of all different sizes.... Does a nice job of locating the football on deeper shots and will fight his way to the catch point on shorter routes. Should be viewed as a multi-year starter type of talent that can be utilized in a number of different ways. Will likely need some time before he’s ready to go on Saturdays, but range and instincts could lead to early playing time..."
