Nation's No. 1 offensive tackle schedules Nebraska Cornhuskers official visit: Report

Mater Dei (California) five-star offensive tackle Brandon Baker is taking a third trip to Nebraska

The Nebraska Cornhuskers are making waves on the recruiting trail, particularly in the home state.

But Matt Rhule is hoping to expand his reach and make a major statement with one of the nation's top prospects in one of the country's most talented states.

According to On3, Mater Dei (California) five-star offensive tackle Brandon Baker has scheduled an official visit to Nebraska on September 16 - his third trip to Lincoln since the spring.

The 6-foot-5, 285-pound athlete, rated the nation's No. 1 offensive tackle, has already taken official visit to Ohio State (June 9), Texas (June 16) and Georgia (June 23), but another program is the perceived leader.

While Baker has been tight-lipped about naming a favorite, the Oregon Ducks are widely believed to be team-to-beat.

Baker's older brother, Gary Baker, played defensive line for Oregon and he has a strong relationship with the coaching staff.

That bond took a slight hit when Oregon offensive line coach Adrian Klemm left for a job with the New England Patriots, but the Ducks have bridged the gap with new position coach A'lique Terry.

Still, there's an opening, and Nebraska is clearly working to establish itself as a true contender.

So far, Rhule has had success on the recruiting trail in 2024.

The Cornhuskers' class is ranked No. 21 nationally and is led by commitments from five of the top six recruits in the home state - Ainsworth four-star tight end Carter Nelson, Bellevue West four-star quarterback Daniel Kaelin and wide receivers Dae'vonn Hall and Isaiah McMorris and Elkhorn South three-star offensive tackle Ashton Murphy.

While Nelson is a worthy class headliner, as the nation's No. 2 tight end, Baker would take things to another level.

He would be the highest-rated pledge in program history.

To accomplish that, however, Nebraska will have to hit a home run on his upcoming official visit.
