THIS WEEK’S SOUTH CAROLINA COACH OF THE WEEK NOMINEES

Editor’s note: Our Coach of the Week feature and corresponding poll is intended to be fun, and we do not set limits on how many times a fan can vote during the competition. However, we do not allow votes that are generated by script, macro or other automated means. Coaches that receive votes by script, macro or other automated means will be disqualified.

Dan Jones, Gaffney

Jones oversaw the Indians’ 26-20 overtime win over Spartanburg in a battle of two perennial top teams. Gaffney, the AAAAA defending state champion, has recovered from a 1-2 start and is poised for another title run.

Rich Edwards, Hammond

The Skyhawks dumped Cardinal Newman 40-0 and are now 6-2. Their two losses were to undefeated Prince Avenue Christian from Athens, Georgia and Gaffney. Hammond only lost 14-7 to Gaffney, almost pulling off what would have been the perhaps the biggest upset in South Carolina high school history.

Hammond has long been the top independent school program in South Carolina. The Skyhawks are the defending state champions and may be on the way to another title in 2022.

Tommy Norwood, St. James

St. James beat Socastee to clinch the program’s first-ever state playoff berth. Norwood was a highly successful coach in North Carolina and he’s getting it done in the Palmetto State, too.

Jeff Calabrese, Hartsville

What can you say when a team piles up 82 points in one game? Hartsville was 3-3 before its 82-42 wipeout of Myrtle Beach. Obviously, a fire was lit and Hartsville will be a dangerous opponent for anyone the rest of the season.

Tom Knotts, Dutch Fork

Knotts has won so many state championships that it’s hard to keep up with them. The veteran coach has been doing it right for many years, first at Independence in Charlotte and now Dutch Fork.. It has gotten to the point where Dutch Fork not winning a state championship is unusual.

Dutch Fork fell to Gaffney in the AAAAA finals last year. But after a 52-0 demolition of a White Knoll team that was 6-1 coming into the game, Dutch Fork might be on the path to another state championship.

Adam Holmes, Gray Collegiate

The War Eagles were off to an 0-3 start after winning the AA state championship. But two of those losses were to 6-1 Oceanside Collegiate and undefeated South Atlanta from Georgia.

Since that slow start, the War Eagles have won five in a row.
