Summerville wins 5-A softball state championship

Ansley Bennett pitched a seven-hitter and drove in both runs as Summerville beat Byrnes 2-0 to complete a two-game sweep of their 5-A state championship series.

The Green Wave (32-1) turned two double plays behind Bennett, a sophomore. It was the first state championship in softball for Summerville history after three previous finals appearances in 2010, 2013 and 2015.

Summerville scored its runs in the third inning off USC Upstate signee Sierra Maness, who didn't allow a hit after the third inning and struck out 14.

Bennett also hurled a shutout in Game 1 as the Green Wave prevailed 1-0. She allowed just three hits as did Maness.

Katie Guilliam’s RBI single in the fifth inning brought home Abby Driscoll with the only run of the game.

Maness had a spectacular senior season, going 23-3 with an 0.75 earned run average and 275 strikeouts in 151 innings.

Summerville’s only loss was 2-1 to Byrnes in a tournament on March 18.

Byrnes concluded its season with a 29-5 record.
