Alyzza Campos leads Laredo LBJ to 4-2 win over Del Rio in District 30-6A softball game

Campos controlled the game from the circle, allowing just two hits and striking out 10

LAREDO, Texas - Defending District 30-6A softball champion Laredo LBJ needed a victory Tuesday night. After dropping their district opener last week to rival Eagle Pass, the Lady Wolves knew they couldn't afford another loss.

Laredo LBJ answered the call, rallying to beat Del Rio 4-2 at the Bill Johnson Student Activity Complex.

Laredo LBJ junior pitcher Alyzza Campos controlled the game from the circle, allowing just two hits and striking out 10. She also roped a key two-run double.

Del Rio's starter Rebekah Alcaraz lasted just 3 1/3 innings, allowing eight hits and four runs.

The Lady Wolves banged out 11 hits, led by Valerie Loyola's 3-for-4 night at the plate. Alexis Martinez, Alesandra Thatcher and Campos all went 2-for-3.

Campos' two biggest punch outs came in the sixth inning. With Laredo LBJ leading 4-2, Del Rio rallied to load the bases with nobody out after three consecutive defensive errors by the Lady Wolves.

Campos got out of the jam by getting a ground ball from Del Rio’s Jada Bispop directly to second baseman Vivica Garcia, who scooped it up and fired to home plate for the first out. Campos then struck out the next two hitters to end the inning.

The Queens struck first in the opening inning as Hope Martinez, who went 3-for-4, laced an RBI single on a 1-2 count to give Del Rio a 1-0 lead. They tacked on a second run in the top of the fourth inning to take a 2-0 lead.

Campos and company found their offensive rhythm in the bottom of the fourth inning, mounting a comeback. On a 3-2 count Vivica Garcia singled then made her way to second base when sophomore shortstop Marianna Gamboa drew a walk.

Campos then blasted the ball to the warning track for a two-run double, plating Garcia and Gamboa to make it a 2-2 ball game. Laredo LBJ’s third run came courtesy of a wild pitch as Alexis Martinez darted home to give the Lady Wolves the lead for the first time. The Lady Wolves added an insurance run later in the inning.
