LAREDO, Texas - The Eagle Pass softball team has won 14 district titles in the past 15 years under coach Oscar Ruiz.
It looks like the Lady Eagles are well on their way to another championship season in 2022.
Monday afternoon Eagle Pass put on another dominating performance, beating Laredo Alexander 12-2 at the Bill Johnson Student Activity Complex.
“It was a tough game. We could not execute the way that we wanted to, but we got the runs in early, and we slowed down,” Ruiz said. “I told my girls, we are ahead in the game, all you have to do is come out and be yourself. I think they were stressing, trying to 10-run rule, trying to hit better than what they are supposed to or was asked of them. Other than that, they had a good day.”
The Lady Eagles remain perfect in district play at 3-0 and at the top of the district standings. They have little time to relish their victory as they turn around to play Laredo United South who comes into town on Tuesday also 3-0 in district play.
“It is hard to be perfect in district play but we try to do our best,” Ruiz said. “I tell the girls play your game and let the game speak for itself at the end of the day.”
Eagle Pass outhit Laredo Alexander 14-7 and were efficient with runners in scoring position.
Eagle Pass pitcher Larissa Jacquez has been the ace of the team all season and Monday afternoon she put together another great performance. Jacquez struck out 11 and only allowed seven hits.
Jaquez also did her part at the plate, going 3 for 4 with four RBI. Karyna Perez went 2 for 3 and Roccio Moreno went 1 for 2 with 2 RBI.
Laredo Alexander’s Kayla Herrera was perfect at the plate, going 3 for 3. Herrera also displayed her uncanny speed, twice beating out a ball hit to the infield. She went on to score the Lady Bulldogs first run on a single by Krista Gamez in the third inning.
Gamez started to struggle in the circle in the second inning and issued three consecutive walks before Jaquez ripped a single to the outfield to score two runs to give Eagle Pass a 6-0 lead.
The third, fifth and sixth innings were the only innings Eagle Pass did not score a run.
Valeria Vielma came on in relief of Jacquez the last two innings to close out the game.
