LAREDO, Texas - Alyzza Campos struck out four batters and only allowed two hits to help Laredo LBJ beat Laredo United 6-1 Tuesday afternoon at the Bill Johnson Student Activity Complex.

“The girls came out and played well,” LBJ head coach Whitney Dupuis said. “Alyzza pitched well on the mound, defensively we had a solid game. The hitting ... when runners are on base, we have to score those runs.”

The Lady Wolves pushed their district record to 2-1 and are currently in third place in the District 30-6A standings behind league leader Eagle Pass (4-0) and Laredo United South (3-1).

Campos went the distance, pitching seven innings and keeping Laredo United on their heals at the plate. Only Laredo United’s Gali Pena and Regina Rodriguez were able to pick up hits against Campos.

A bright spot for Laredo United was pitcher KK Cox who finished with six strikeouts.

Laredo LBJ outhit Laredo United 11-2 with Campos leading the way on offense. Campos is known for her work in the circle but she is equally impressive at the plate and Tuesday afternoon she had another great outing, going 3 for 3.

Also lending a helping hand on offense were Itzel Landeros (3 for 4) and Heily Garcia (2 for 3). Hailey Garcia, Alexis Martinez, and Alessandra Thatcher all drove in runs for Laredo LBJ.

Laredo United kept things close early, allowing just one run through four innings.

But the wheels came off for the Lady Longhorns in the fifth inning. Laredo LBJ utilized a combination of hits and errors to score five runs in that frame. Laredo United committed five errors in the game.

Leadoff batter Valeria Loyola reached base on an error to start the fifth inning and moved to second base on a single by Marianna Gamboa. A walk to Campos loaded the bases for Martinez who ripped an RBI single. Two throwing errors brought home two more runs for the Lady Wolves. When everything settled Laredo LBJ had extended their lead to 6-0.

Laredo United managed a run in the sixth inning as Nadia Moreno crossed home plate and make it a 6-1 game.

Laredo LBJ heads back to the diamond on Thursday as the Lady Wolves are set to welcome Laredo Nixon in the final game during spring break.

“The defense has been working really hard,” Dupuis said. “The girls are playing behind each other and we are just trying to get that first out and just get the routine plays.”
