Photos: Laredo LBJ softball team clinches second place in District 30-6A
LAREDO, Texas - With playoff seeding on the line, Laredo LBJ rolled to an 11-1 victory over Laredo United South Tuesday night, clinching second place in District 30-6A.
“The rival games are always tough,” Laredo LBJ head coach Whitney Dupuis said. “Alyzza (Campos) did a great job on the mound, she had command of her pitches and the control of the game. I think she did very well, hitting her spots.
"The bats came alive, one through nine and defensively we were really sound. It was a good, complete team effort. We are excited to be in second place and excited to see the competition in the playoffs.”
Eagle Pass went undefeated in district (12-0) and won its 15th district title. Laredo LBJ finished second, followed by Del Rio in third and Laredo United South in fourth place.
Campos turned in another stellar performance in the circle for the Lady Wolves. She recorded 11 strikeouts and scattered just six hits.
Laredo LBJ's bats came alive early, scoring three runs in the first inning. Vivica Garcia, Valeri Loyola, Itzel Landeros, Marianna Gamboa, Alessandra Thatcher, Hailey Garcia and Alexis Martinez all had hits in the inning.
The damage could have been worse, but Laredo United South left fielder Anahi Martinez made an incredible throw to catcher Ema Ramirez to nail Campos at home on an attempted sacrifice fly.
Laredo United South scored their lone run in the bottom of the first inning on a sacrifice fly from Ramirez that scored Anitza Gutierrez.
Campos kept Laredo United South's bats quiet the rest of the game, hitting the corners and moving the ball around the strike zone.
Laredo LBJ continued to tack on runs, led by Loyola (2-for-3), Vivica Garcia (3-for-4), Gamboa (3-for-4) and Alexis Martinez (3-for-4). The Lady Wolves scored their 11th run in the sixth inning, which ended the game.
