Cy Park sophomore QB Deyon Batiste draws first Power Five college football offer

Deyon Batiste made a splash picking up his first offer to play Division I college football.

The Cypress Park quarterback announced via Twitter on Saturday that he had officially earned his first Power Five offer from Iowa State.

“It feels extremely good to have received my first offer,” Batiste said. “I had watched everyone around me receive their offers and I just waited my turn.”

Batiste, a Class of 2024 QB, should be poised to take a leading role within a Cy Park offense that has produced many of the Houston area’s most versatile prospects, like LSU signee and former Tigers’ running back/linebacker Harold Perkins.

Batiste served as his team’s primary backup quarterback during his varsity debut as a sophomore last season when the Tigers finished 9-2 and split the District 16-6A title. He made appearances in five games for Cy Park and completed five of nine passes for 126 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions.

But despite limited varsity game reps to this point, the 6-foot-4 signal caller wasn’t surprised to draw his first college offer from a Big 12 program.

“It wasn’t as surprising because I had already started gaining a good relationship with the coaches. They were the first team to truly express how they feel about me as a player and a person,” Batiste said.

“The coaches at Iowa State, I feel like, express how they feel more than anyone in the country. They’ve shown that they really care about me and have their best interest towards me.”

The Cy Park QB told SBLive Texas that he’s excited to see the Cyclones’ coaching staff when he visits Ames for the first time July 13-14.

Batiste added that he would like to see a few more college campuses before the Tigers start preparing for the 2022 high school season. He has taken a few in-state visits too since the 2021 season wrapped up.

“I honestly liked the visit to UTSA a lot. It was a great environment and work space,” he said. “I don’t know anything else right now about any other visits, but if I’m able to I would go to as many as I can.”

The soon-to-be junior QB will be at the center of a Cypress Park offense that will be plugging in first-year starters at a number of positions this fall.

But with his 6-foot-4 frame and a spring full of reps now under his belt, Batiste feels like he and the Tigers are primed for another big season after a 9-2 finish last year in a district that’s been dominated recently by elite offensive playmakers.

“I feel extremely good about the season going forward,” Batiste said. “A lot of teams are doubting us because we graduated all of our starters, so people think we don’t have anyone to fill those shoes. But I feel like we have a lot of hidden gems that these teams haven’t seen and I’m sure it will surprise them.”
