Congratulations to Summer Creek boys track and field standout Darius Rainey for being voted SBLive’s Texas High School Athlete of the Week for May 9-15!
The senior won individual golds at the 6A state meet in the 400-meter dash with a time of 46.36 and the 800-meter run with a time of 1:50.63. He also anchored Summer Creek’s 4x400-meter relay team that posted a gold-medal-winning time of 3:10.36.
Rainey received 53.33% of the vote, beating out Timber Creek's Isabella Bojkovic who finished second with 46.1%.

Natalie Cook, Flower Mound girls track and field: The Oklahoma State signee had a pair of record-breaking races in the 1,600 and 3,200-meter runs at the 6A UIL State Track and Field Championships. Cook ran one of the few sub 10-minute 3,200 times in UIL history - with a time of 9:48.25 - shattering the state meet record, a 9:58.77 mark set by Denton Guyer’s Brynn Brown last year. In the final race of her high school career, Cook ran a 4:40.29 in the 1,600 to win another state title - breaking Houston Lamar’s Julia Heymach's previous state record of 4:40.97 set in 2015.
Gracyn Whitsell, Nazarene Christian Academy softball: The freshman tossed a no-hitter and struck out 10 batters to lead NCA past Christian Life Prep, 12-1, for the TCAF state championship.
Tariah Johnson, Fort Bend Marshall girls track and field: Johnson defended her 2021 state championship in the 100-meter hurdles winning the race with a time of 13.62. The Lady Buffs also locked up back-to-back 5A team state titles, beating out Mansfield Timberview (61 points) and Lancaster (52 points) in the final team standings.
Ella Strickland, Junction girls track and field: The senior pole-vaulter set a new 2A state record and broke the UIL’s girls pole vault state meet record for all classification levels with a 13’9.25” clearance at the 2A state meet.
Isabel Conde De Frankenberg, Cedar Park girls track and field: Conde De Frankenberg won an individual state title and smashed the 5A girls state meet record (4:48.16) in the 1,600 with a time of 4:45.95 - finishing more than five seconds ahead of the rest of her competitors. The sophomore also won another individual state title in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 10:34.13, which left her more than 15 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher.
Isabella Bojkovic, Timber Creek softball: Bojkovic batted .600 with two home runs and seven RBIs across the regional quarterfinal series against Frenship.
RJ Ruais, Celina baseball: In game two of the 4A playoffs series against Waxahachie Life, Ruais tossed a complete-game shutout with 14 strikeouts and allowed just two hits to help send Celina to the regional quarterfinals. He also added a home run in the 4-0 win.
Pierre Goree, Duncanville boys track and field: The SMU football signee won an individual state title in the 6A 100-meter dash with a 10.22-second mark. Goree also ran the fastest 100-meter dash this year nationally when he clocked a new PR at 10.09 seconds at the Region II-6A meet to qualify for the state championships.
Che Nwabuko, Manor boys track and field: Nwabuko, a Pitt football signee, won three gold medals at the 5A state meet - the 100-meter dash (10.17), the 200-meter dash with a time of 20.53 (new Class 5A state record), and ran a leg on the winning 4x100 meter relay team.
Nathan Jones, Brock boys track and field: The all-state tight end and Minnesota football signee won a pair of silver medals in the 3A boys shot put and discus. Jones hurled his top shot-put toss of 62 feet, 7.25 inches to firmly secure second place. In the discus, his 176’5” throw measured more than 15 feet farther than his next closest competitor.
Parker Herlehy, Frisco Independence baseball: Herlehy tossed a complete-game shutout, scattering four hits and striking out four batters in a 1-0 win over Woodrow Wilson. In an 8-4 comeback victory against Woodrow Wilson, Herlehy had a pair of RBIs to help lift Frisco Independence to the Class 5A Region II quarterfinals for the first time in history.
