Look: College Station escapes with 27-24 double overtime win over Leander Glenn
COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Leander Glenn gave College Station — the No. 19 team in SBLive's Texas Top 50 power rankings — all it could handle for four quarters and then some Friday night at Cougar Stadium.
The Grizzlies battled College Station deep into overtime during a back-and-forth duel for first place in District 11-5A DI.
The Cougars, however, were too hot to handle.
Senior quarterback Arrington Maiden connected with receiver Aydan Martinez-Brown for the game-winning 19-yard touchdown catch in double overtime, lifting College Station to a 27-24 victory in 2OT over Leander Glenn and securing a pivotal district win.
The victory also helped the Cougars extend a six-game winning streak and solidify their grasp on first place in the 11-5A DI district standings, improving to 6-1 overall and 4-0 in district play.
After a defensive first half sent both teams to halftime knotted up at 7-7, Leander Glenn seized control of the momentum out of the gate to start the second half.
The Grizzlies held the ball for most of the third quarter, driving the length of the field and eating clock before capping off a long scoring drive with a 3-yard touchdown run by Mason Johnson, giving Glenn a 14-7 edge with about 4 minutes left during the third quarter.
The cardiac Cougars responded with a scoring drive of their own with time ticking away late in the fourth quarter.
College Station pushed the ball down to Glenn's 1-yard line on a long drive highlighted by a 59-yard run by Martinez-Brown, but was held out of the end zone on three straight plays by the Grizzlies' defense to set up a game-deciding fourth-and-goal scenario.
Senior running back Zach Dang punched it up the middle and scored the game-tying touchdown on a 1-yard run with 19 seconds remaining to level the score at 14-14 and send the game to overtime.
The Cougars and Grizzlies traded touchdowns during the first overtime period to push the score to 21-21.
Martinez-Brown pushed College Station ahead with a 10-yard touchdown run on the first possession of overtime before Glenn's Sky Mendez scored on a 3-yard QB keeper.
Glenn stumbled to start the second overtime period and ultimately settled for a 27-yard field goal, which gave the Grizzlies a 24-21 edge and set up the game-winning score for the Cougars shortly afterward.
College Station (6-1, 4-0) will look to keep rolling and add to its winning streak when the Cougars return to action against the Georgetown Eagles (5-2, 3-1) in another pivotal District 11-5A DI matchup at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21, at the Georgetown ISD Athletic Complex.
Leander Glenn (5-2, 3-1), meanwhile, will look to keep up in the 11-5A DI district championship hunt when the Grizzlies face the Cedar Park Timberwolves (2-5, 2-2) at the same time Friday, Oct. 21, at Bible Stadium in Leander.
