Look: Katy clobbers rival Cinco Ranch, clinches District 19-6A title
KATY, Texas — Ever since escaping with a one-point victory in their district opener, the Katy Tigers have dominated their District 19-6A opponents for weeks.
But Katy may have saved its most well-rounded performance of the year for Friday night at Legacy Stadium.
Fresh off a bye with an extra week of preparation under their belt, the Tigers tore up rival Katy Cinco Ranch defensively and clobbered the Cougars in a runaway 56-28 victory.
Katy improved to 8-0 overall this season with the victory, which also clinched the program a second straight District 19-6A championship.
The Tigers pounced on Cinco Ranch early and often, solidifying a 14-0 lead by the end of the first quarter and scoring 21 unanswered points to start the contest.
Senior running back Seth Davis, a Mississippi State commit, punched in both of the Tigers' first-quarter rushing touchdowns.
Davis got the scoring started on a 1-yard touchdown run and then followed that up with a 13-yard rushing score on Katy's next offensive possession.
The Tigers kept pouring it on at the outset of the second quarter too, when senior quarterback Caleb Koger connected with Oliver Ginn on a 17-yard touchdown pass to make it a 21-0 deficit for Cinco Ranch.
The Cougars broke the seal and put their first points on the board when senior quarterback Gavin Rutherford unloaded a 72-yard touchdown pass to Sam McKnight.
Cinco Ranch found the end zone one more time before the half, but Koger responded with two more second-quarter touchdown throws.
He hit Chase Johnsey on a 9-yard strike for a touchdown and then rifled a 29-yard touchdown pass to Micah Koenig just before the halftime buzzer to help Katy carry a 35-14 advantage into the break.
The Tigers came out firing on all cylinder to kick off the third quarter too.
Davis snuck into the end zone again on a 6-yard touchdown run and was followed up by a 35-yard scoring run by junior back Dallas Glass to put the game out of reach for the Cougars.
Glass and Davis headlined an especially potent rushing attack for the Tigers, who collectively tallied 348 yards on the ground Friday night. Davis finished with 147 rushing yards and three touchdown runs, while Glass ended the night with 120 yards and a pair of rushing TDs.
Koger led Katy through the air, throwing for 143 yards and three touchdowns on 10-of-16 passing. The Tigers also converted on eight of nine third-down conversion attempts.
Katy (8-0, 6-0) will look to move one step closer toward its second straight perfect regular-season finish when the Tigers return to action against Katy Seven Lakes (1-7, 1-5) at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27, at Rhodes Stadium in Katy.
Katy Cinco Ranch (6-3, 5-2), meanwhile, heads into a bye week before the Cougars will have a chance to bounce back in their regular-season finale against Seven Lakes at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 3, at Legacy Stadium in Katy.
