Look: Tomball takes down Klein Forest 20-17 in double overtime
TOMBALL, Texas — After heading into halftime scoreless for the first time this season, the Tomball Cougars flipped a switch at the start of the third quarter.
The Cougars clawed their way back in a pivotal District 15-6A battle against Klein Forest on Friday night at Tomball ISD Stadium.
Spearheaded by senior running back Christian Womack, Tomball's relentless rushing attack accounted for three touchdown runs after halftime and the Cougars held strong defensively during crunch time to rally and beat the Eagles 20-17 in double overtime.
The victory extends the Cougars now six-game winning streak and propels Tomball into sole possession of first place in the 15-6A district standings.
The Eagles struck first on a touchdown pass from Jaylen Bragg to Chandler Williams, which gave Klein Forest an early 7-0 edge with about 2 minutes left during the first quarter.
Klein Forest carried its touchdown lead into halftime before Womack went on a second-half tear for Tomball.
The Cougars' senior back found the end zone three times, including on the game-winning score during the second overtime period.
Womack scored his first rushing touchdown of the night on a 3-yard carry up the middle on a first-and-goal opportunity, diving across the goal line to knot the game up at 7-7 with 2:22 left during the third quarter.
He struck again a few minutes later. Womack bounced to the outside and won a footrace to the pylon to score on a 40-yard touchdown run, which gave the Cougars their first lead of the game, a 14-7 edge, with 9:25 remaining in regulation.
But Klein Forest responded quickly to tie the game up at 14-14 midway through the fourth quarter when Bragg fired his second touchdown pass of the night on a running 15-yard throw to sophomore receiver Deric Scott.
The Eagles' fourth-quarter score helped send the game into overtime, with both teams being held scoreless during the first OT period.
Klein Forest kicked off double overtime with a go-ahead field goal that pushed the Eagles back in front of Tomball 17-14.
That's when Womack came back to put the game on ice.
He charged up the middle on a 3-yard touchdown run to seal the 20-17 double-overtime win for the Cougars, who clinched a Class 6A UIL playoff berth for the second straight season with the victory too.
Tomball (6-2, 5-0) will look to add onto its six-game winning streak when the Cougars hit the road for another pivotal district game versus the Klein Collins Tigers (7-1, 4-1) at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27, at Klein Memorial Stadium in Spring.
Klein Forest (4-4, 2-3), meanwhile, will look to remain in the thick of District 15-6A's tight playoff race when the Eagles return to action against the Klein Bearkats (3-5, 2-3) at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28, at Klein Memorial Stadium.
