Azle, Lubbock Cooper win team titles at District 4-5A wrestling meet

AZLE, Texas — West Texas and DFW schools have a history of success in wrestling, producing several of the Lone Star State's top grapplers in recent years.

On Saturday, wrestlers representing schools from as far west as Lubbock and as far east as Fort Worth met in Azle for the District 4-5A wrestling meet to determine which wrestlers were top of the district, and which teams stood alone at the top.

Due to inclement weather, the tournament was moved from a two-day format to just a single day on Saturday.

Azle beats out Lubbock for District 4-5A boys team title

After more than 8 hours of grueling matches, the host Azle Hornets proved to be the best in the boys division, followed by Lubbock High and Lubbock Cooper to fill the podium.

Azle wrestlers won gold medal in six out of 14 weight classes, with three more qualifying for the Region I-5A meet in Canyon next week. The Hornets ended the day with 247 final points from all of their combined matches.

Lubbock finished second overall with 204.5 points with five qualifiers and two weight class champions. They were followed by cross-town rival Lubbock Cooper with 173 points. Cooper ended up with seven regional qualifiers, three of whom won their weight class outright.

Springtown and Aledo followed close behind. Springtown had one champion in the 285-pound division, and though Aledo boasted no outright district champs Saturday, both teams combined to send eight more wrestlers to the regional meet.

Lubbock Cooper runs away with District 4-5A girls team title

While the Lubbock Cooper boys performed well at the district meet Saturday, it was the Pirates girls  wrestlers who stole the show in Azle. Three Cooper wrestlers earned gold medals by the end of the day, while eight more reached the podium and were able to qualify for the regional meet, extending their season another week.

Behind Cooper’s 219 total points, Lubbock Monterey secured a distant second place with an impressive 148 combined points. And then despite only having one outright individual district champ, Lubbock Monterey will be sending a district-leading nine wrestlers to the Region I-5A meet in Canyon.

Following closely behind was Lubbock High, finishing just two points back from Monterey with 146. The Weterners are sending six wrestlers to Canyon with four of them heading to regionals as district champions.

Another impressive performance of the day was Henrietta’s Preslee Branch, who was the lone representative from her school at the District 4-5A meet.

Branch won every bout she participated in before ultimately finishing second in the 132-pound weight class, extending the small school’s wrestling season by another week after punching her ticket to the regional meet.
