Congratulations to La Vernia baseball senior outfielder/pitcher Tyler Hensley for being voted SBLive’s Texas High School Athlete of the Week for April 17-23!

The Bears’ standout shined on the mound and at the plate in a sweep of Gonzales, which featured 12-1 and 10-0 wins for La Vernia.

Hensley tossed a shutout no-hitter in the Bears’ 10-0 victory against Gonzales, striking out 13 while allowing three walks in 6.0 innings pitched.

He was also 4-for-6 hitting (.667 AVG) with three RBI, two runs scored, two extra-base hits, two walks, a triple, a double and a .750 OBP in La Vernia’s back-to-back wins.

Hensley ran away with our latest Texas Athlete of the Week vote to capture this week's honor, receiving 44.92% of the vote. El Paso Hanks softball catcher Mie Bailey finished second with 28.26% of the vote.

The Bears have since wrapped up district play by splitting a three-game set with San Antonio Kennedy, bouncing back after a 7-4 loss to the Rockets to win two out of three clashes against Kennedy with a 6-3 victory and a 12-3 win.

La Vernia (18-8-2, 7-3) has secured District 28-4A’s No. 2 seed heading into the 2023 UIL Class 4A Texas high school baseball playoffs, where the Bears will face the San Antonio Davenport Wolves (16-12, 8-6) in the bi-district round.

Alexis Warncke, East Bernard P/UTL

Warncke was 5-for-7 hitting (.714 AVG) with 10 RBI, four runs scored, four extra-base hits, two HRs, two doubles, a walk and a .750 OBP in a 9-1 win against Danbury and a 15-0 win over Hitchcock.

She also picked up a victory against Danbury in two appearances in the circle, throwing 18 Ks, four walks, three hits allowed, one earned run allowed and a .111 OBA through 8.0 innings pitched for the Brahmas.

Arlette Hernandez, La Joya P

Hernandez was 4-for-6 hitting (.667 AVG) with five RBI, four runs scored, four extra-base hits, two HRs, a triple, a double, a walk, a stolen base and a .714 OBP in an 8-0 win against Edinburg Economedes and a 15-0 win over Mission.

She also picked up two victories in the circle after throwing for 21 Ks, four hits allowed, two walks, no runs allowed and a .114 OBA through 10.0 innings pitched for the Coyotes.

Hailey Van Beekum, Idalou 1B/P

Van Beekum was 3-for-4 hitting (.750 AVG) with six RBI, three runs scored, three extra-base hits, two walks, two HRs, a double, a sac fly and an .833 OBP in an 11-1 win against Slaton and an 11-0 win over Shallowater.

Hannah Wells, Coahoma P

Wells was 3-for-4 hitting (.750 AVG) with four RBI, three runs scored, three extra-base hits, three walks, two HRs, a double and an .857 OBP in a 19-0 win against San Angelo TLCA and an 11-0 win over San Angelo TLCA.

She also picked up a win in the circle in the Bulldogs’ 19-0 victory against San Angelo TLCA, striking out nine through five perfect innings for Coahoma.

Kasidi Pickering, Humble Atascocita CF

Pickering — an Oklahoma Sooners signee — was 6-for-7 hitting (.857 AVG) with five runs scored, four RBI, four extra-base hits, three SBs, two doubles, a home run, a triple, a walk and an .875 OBP in an 11-1 win against Galena Park North Shore and a 13-9 win over Humble Summer Creek.

Chloe Constantino, Levelland OF

Constantino was 6-for-10 hitting (.600 AVG) with eight runs scored, six extra-base hits, four doubles, two RBI, two HRs and a .600 OBP in a 9-8 loss to Big Spring, an 11-6 win against Snyder and a 13-3 win over Snyder.

Brooke Westfahl, San Antonio MacArthur SS/CF

Westfahl was 4-for-12 hitting (.333 AVG) with nine RBI, four runs scored, three extra-base hits, three SBs, two walks, two doubles, a triple, a sac fly and a .429 OBP in an 11-9 win against San Antonio Burbank, a 14-5 victory against San Antonio Highlands and a 12-2 win over Alamo Heights.

Jordan Cox, Dripping Springs P/INF

Cox picked up back-to-back wins in the circle in the Tigers’ 2-0 victory against Del Valle and their 9-0 win over Austin Anderson, throwing for 20 Ks, seven hits allowed, two walks, no runs allowed and a .137 OBA through 14.0 innings pitched.

She was also 3-for-6 hitting (.500 AVG) with four RBI, two extra-base hits, a triple, a double, a walk and a .571 OBP for Dripping Springs.

Mariah DeBose, Spring CF

DeBose was 3-for-4 hitting (.750 AVG) with five RBI, three runs scored, two extra-base hits, two SBs, a home run, a double and a .750 OBP in a 22-0 win against Aldine Eisenhower.

Jocelyne Galvan, Aransas Pass P

Galvan earned back-to-back victories in the circle in the Panthers’ 7-4 win against Goliad and a 1-0 win over Taft after throwing for 28 Ks, four hits allowed, three walks, four unearned runs allowed and a .043 OBA through 14.0 innings pitched.

She was also 3-for-7 hitting (.429 AVG) with two runs scored for Aransas Pass.

Amyah Starks, Abilene INF

Starks was 2-for-3 hitting (.667 AVG) with eight RBI, two runs scored, two HRs, two walks and an .800 OBP in an 18-5 win over Lubbock Cooper.

Janelle Wilson, Friendswood P

Wilson picked up a pair of wins in the circle in the Mustangs’ 1-0 victory against Manvel and their 5-1 win over La Porte, throwing for 23 Ks, three hits allowed, two walks, one unearned run allowed and a .065 OBA through 14.0 innings pitched.

She was also 1-for-6 hitting (.167 AVG) with two RBI for Friendswood.

Mia Bailey, El Paso Hanks C

Bailey was 3-for-6 hitting (.500 AVG) with six RBI, three runs scored, three extra-base hits, two walks, two HRs, a double, a stolen base and a .625 OBP in an 8-1 win against El Paso Parkland and a 12-0 win over El Paso Ysleta.

Tia Warsop, Mansfield Lake Ridge CF

Warsop — an Oklahoma State Cowgirls signee — was 5-for-7 hitting (.714 AVG) with five runs scored, four RBI, four extra-base hits, two triples, two doubles, a walk, a stolen base and a .750 OBP in a 9-1 win against Waxahachie and a 14-0 win over Cedar Hill.

Sidne Peters, Santa Fe P

Peters — a Washington Huskies signee — picked up a pair of wins in the circle in the Indians’ 16-1 victory against Texas City and their 2-0 win over Manvel after throwing for 24 Ks, five hits allowed, two walks, one earned run allowed and a .122 OBA through 12.0 innings pitched.

She was also 3-for-6 hitting (.500 AVG) with two RBI, a walk and a .571 OBP for Santa Fe.

Bri Duffey, Royse City INF

Duffey was 6-for-6 hitting (1.000 AVG) with six RBI, five runs scored, three extra-base hits, two walks, two doubles, a home run, a stolen base and a 1.000 OBP in a 15-0 win against Rockwall Heath and a 10-0 win over Mesquite Horn.

Cameron Timmons, Southlake Carroll P/OF

Timmons picked up a pair of victories in the circle in the Dragons’ 3-0 win against Trophy Club Byron Nelson and their 3-0 win over Keller Fossil Ridge, throwing for 13 Ks, five hits allowed, three walks, no runs allowed and a .109 OBA through 14.0 innings pitched.

Trinity Allen, Cypress Bridgeland UTL

Allen was 4-for-5 hitting (.800 AVG) with five RBI, five runs scored, three SBs, three walks, two extra-base hits, a triple, a double and an .875 OBP in a 17-3 win against Cy Lakes and a 15-0 win over Cy Lakes.

Cadence Chambliess, Godley P

Chambliess was 5-for-8 hitting (.625 AVG) with seven RBI, a run scored, a double, a stolen base and a .667 OBP in a 12-1 win against Hillsboro and an 11-7 win over Kennedale.

She also picked up a win in the circle in the Wildcats’ victory against Kennedale after throwing five Ks, six hits allowed, no walks, two earned runs allowed and a .231 OBA through 5.1 innings pitched.

Berlynn McLaren, Sweeny P

McLaren was 4-for-6 hitting (.667 AVG) with six RBI, two SBs, a run scored, a sac bunt and a 667. OBP in a 20-0 win against La Marque and a 6-0 win over Freeport Brazosport.

She also picked up a win in the circle in the Bulldogs’ victory against Brazosport, throwing for six Ks, six walks, one hit allowed, zero runs allowed and a .062 OBA through 5.0 innings pitched for Sweeny.


BASEBALL

Nathan Rivas, Weslaco East 1B/3B/P

Rivas was 3-for-6 hitting (.500 AVG) with four RBI, three extra-base hits, two runs scored, two HRs, a double, a walk and a .571 OBP in a 10-0 win against Donna and a 9-0 win over Donna.

Kade Gavina, Bushland SS/P

Gavina was 8-for-10 hitting (.800 AVG) with 12 RBI, nine runs scored, six extra-base hits, three doubles, two HRs, a triple, a walk and an .818 OBP in a 23-1 win over Friona and a 29-0 win at Tulia. He also hit for the cycle in the Falcons’ victory against Tulia.

Aaron Tondre, Medina Valley SS/P

Tondre was 6-for-7 hitting (.857 AVG) with nine RBI, six runs scored, four extra-base hits, two HRs, two doubles, a walk, a stolen base and an .875 OBP in a 14-2 win against San Antonio Southwest Legacy and a 14-0 win over San Antonio Southside.

Luke Regas, Ennis C/P/SS

Regas tossed a perfect game for the Lions in their 10-0 win over Terrell, striking out 15 through six scoreless, hitless innings on the mound for Ennis.

He was also 4-for-5 hitting (.800 AVG) with four RBI, two extra-base hits, two walks, a triple, a double and an .857 OBP in a 13-0 victory over Terrell and a 10-0 win against Terrell.

Blaine Brown, Alvin Shadow Creek P/OF/1B

Brown shined on the mound in the Sharks’ 10-0 victory against Alief Taylor, throwing a perfect game with 12 strikeouts in 5.0 innings pitched for Shadow Creek.

Noah Olivera, The Colony OF/P

Olivera was 6-for-8 hitting (.750 AVG) with eight RBI, seven runs scored, three extra-base hits, two walks, two triples, a double and an .800 OBP in a 17-0 win at Carrollton Turner and a 14-1 victory over Carrollton Turner.

Kameron Choate, Hooks P/3B/SS

Choate powered Hooks to a 4-1 extra-innings win over New Boston by going the distance on the mound, tallying 17 strikeouts, three hits allowed, two walks, one unearned run allowed and a .115 OBA in 8.0 innings pitched.

He was also 2-for-9 hitting (.222 AVG) with an RBI, a run scored, a walk and a .300 OBP in the Hornets’ 7-1 victory over De Kalb and their win against New Boston.

Ryland Gentry, Coleman P/UTL

Gentry was 8-for-9 hitting (.889 AVG) with eight extra-base hits, seven RBI, seven runs scored, four doubles, three HRs, a triple and an .889 OBP in a 15-1 win over Winters and a 15-8 victory against De Leon.

Nathan Duvall, Austin Westlake 3B

Duvall was 4-for-10 hitting (.400 AVG) with five RBI, four extra-base hits, two runs scored, two doubles, a home run, a triple, a walk, a stolen base and a .455 OBP in a 6-3 loss to Austin Bowie, a 10-4 win against Austin Bowie and a 4-0 win over Austin Akins.

John Youens, Bosqueville OF/P

Youens — a Baylor Bears signee — was 6-for-7 hitting (.857 AVG) with 12 RBI, six runs scored, five extra-base hits, three doubles, two HRs, a walk and an .875 OBP in a 28-3 win at Hico and a 28-0 victory over Hico.

Mason Green, Cypress Woods P/1B/OF

Green — a Baylor Bears signee — earned a victory on the mound in the Wildcats’ 4-0 win over Cypress Springs after throwing for 16 Ks, three hits allowed, zero walks, no runs allowed and a .130 OBA through 6.2 innings pitched for Cy Woods.

Jimmie Harper, New London West Rusk P/SS

Harper earned a win on the mound after hurling a no-hitter in the Raiders’ 3-0 victory against Troup, throwing for 12 Ks and four walks with no hits or runs allowed through 6.0 innings pitched.

He was also 4-for-7 hitting (.571 AVG) with three runs scored, two SBs, an RBI, a double and a .571 OBP in West Rusk’s win against Troup and an 11-1 win over Elysian Fields.

Cade Patschke, Giddings 3B/1B

Patscke was 3-for-5 hitting (.600 AVG) with six runs scored, five RBI, three walks, two extra-base hits, two SBs, a home run, a double and a .750 OBP in a 13-12 win against Caldwell and a 15-2 win over Caldwell. He also smacked a walkoff homer in the Buffaloes’ 13-12 victory against the Hornets.

Will Canalichio, New Braunfels Canyon 1B/P

Canalichio was 7-for-7 hitting (1.000 AVG) with seven RBI, five extra-base hits, two runs scored, three doubles, a home run, a triple, a walk and a 1.000 OBP in an 11-0 win against Seguin and a 12-1 win over Seguin.

Hayden Willey, Fort Bend Ridge Point OF

Willey was 4-for-5 hitting (.800 AVG) with five RBI, two runs scored, a home run, a walk, a stolen base and an .833 OBP in a 4-0 win against Fort Bend Clements and a 14-1 win over Fort Bend Austin.

Hensley earned a win on the mound in the Bears’ 10-0 victory against Gonzales after throwing for 13 Ks and three walks in a shutout no-hitter through 6.0 innings pitched.

He was also 4-for-6 hitting (.667 AVG) with three RBI, two runs scored, two extra-base hits, two walks, a triple, a double and a .750 OBP in a 12-1 win against Gonzales and a 10-0 win over Gonzales.

Clell Caldwell, Amarillo River Road 3B/P

Caldwell was 5-for-9 hitting (.556 AVG) with eight RBI, five runs scored, two walks, a home run and a .636 OBP in a 21-11 win against Dimmitt and a 17-1 win over Friona.

He also earned a win against Dimmitt in two appearances on the mound, throwing for 12 Ks, eight hits allowed, nine earned runs allowed and three walks through 5.1 innings pitched for the Wildcats.

Logan Taylor, Burleson Centennial P/INF

Taylor was 4-for-6 hitting (.667 AVG) with five RBI, three runs scored, two extra-base hits, a home run, a double, a walk and a .714 OBP in a 13-1 win against Joshua and an 11-1 win over Joshua.
