Meet the finalists for SBLive's 2022-23 Texas Class 1A boys basketball Player of the Year
After four months of regular season play and seven rounds of postseason, it's time to recognize the top high school basketball stars in Texas in 2022-23.
SBLive has selected finalists for our Class 1A-6A and Private School Player of the Year awards to be chosen by the fans.
First we took a look at the private school (TAPPS) boys and girls finalists, then Class 6A boys, Class 5A boys, Class 4A boys, Class 3A boys and Class 2A.

1A state player of the year: Meet the finalists
Hayden Alston, Texline Jr. PF
The junior forward made a massive impact in the panhandle, leading Texline three rounds deep into the playoffs. Alston led the Tornadoes in points per game (19.1), field goal percentage (73%) and rebounds per game (9).
Abran Castillo, Floydada Sr. G
Floydada has its senior guard to credit for making it to the regional tournament. Castillo, who averaged 21.4 points per game on the season, drilled a buzzer beating three to push the Whirlwinds onward.
Kevondre Corona, Calvert Jr. G
Though it was a rough year for Calvert, Corona led the Trojans to the second round of the playoffs. The 6-foot-1 junior averaged 16.2 points and 9.5 rebounds per game, both team bests. He also led the team in field goal percentage (46), assists per game (3.2), and three point percentage (32).
Jayden Hernandez, Rocksprings Jr. SG/PG
Hernandez made 29 appearances for Rocksprings in 2022/23. He led the team in scoring with 21.9 points per game average. He led Angoras to the third round of the playoffs where they fell to McMullen County. The 5-foot-11 guard returns next season and will look to solidify his place in Rocksprings history.
Kade Morris, Aspermont Sr. SG
Morris played in 33 games for Aspermont. The 6-foot-1 guard led the Hornets three rounds deep in the playoffs before falling to Munday. Morris averaged 18.2 points per game, a team best. He also led the team in free throw percentage, at 69%. His play earned him district 15-1A offensive player of the year.
Alex Retana, McLean Sr. G
Retana led McLean in points (571) and assists (123) in 2022/23. He averaged 23 minutes on the floor per game, and was a big pillar for a Tigers team that saw its season come to a premature end in the second round to Texline.
Grayson Rigdon, Benjamin Soph. PG/SG
After coming from Strawn, Rigdon dominated on the football field before being even more successful on the hardwood. Behind an average of an astounding 40.7 points per game, he led the Mustangs to the semifinals before falling to eventual state champion Graford. Despite the loss, he was named to the All-State Tournament team.
