Texas (UIL) state high school softball tournament 2023: What happened in 5A, 6A semifinals?

Who will take on Montgomery Lake Creek, the nation's No. 1 softball team, in the Class 5A title?

AUSTIN, Texas — Which teams will walk away from the Red and Charline McCombs Field a Texas state champion?

Three UIL state softball champions have been crowned and three more classifications are still competing. The 5A and 6A semifinals complete. University of Texas in Austin.

Montgomery Lake Creek, the nation's No. 1 ranked high school softball team, defeated Frisco Heritage 9-0 to punch a return ticket to the Class 5A title game Saturday.

On championship Saturday, Liberty faces Corpus Christi Calallen in the 4A title. The 5A final is at 1 p.m. and the 6A title is at 4 p.m.

FRIDAY, JUNE 2

6A STATE SEMIFINALS

Final: Denyon Guyer 6, Bridgeland 3

-- Erin Love drove in an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth on a single to right field. (6-3, bottom 6th)

--Guyer takes the lead. Lauryn Jones reached first on an errant throw to first and advanced to third through two out, then scored from third on a Briana Williams single to short stop. (4-3, Guyer — bottom 4th)

--Bridgeland evened things up with a fourth inning flurry. A Haylie Stum RBI double, Dani Lopez single and Ellen Shull double to left center drove in three runs in as many at-bats. (3-3 — top 4th)

--Guyer struck first, putting three runs through in the bottom of the second. Lauryn Jones single up the middle drove in Erin Peterson from third, Aubriella Martinez scored from third on an Erin Love double down the left field line, then love scored two ABs later on a wild pitch. (3-0, Guyer — bottom 2nd)

Final:  Pearland 3, San Benito 2

--Rodriguez checks out after three strong innings in the circle. She struck out two and walked five with two earned runs, but didn't give up a hit. So San Benito has a no-hitter in tact in the bottom of the fourth as Delgado checks in. (bottom 4th)

--A Montes blast to the right field wall couldn't be snagged out of the air, which scored Sanchez to bring San Benito within one. Rodriguez was tagged out advancing to third. (3-2, Pearland — bottom 4th)

--Schweitzer scored on a failed pickoff attempt to expand Pearland's lead. (3-1, Pearland — bottom 3rd)

--A sacrifice fly from Whitlock allowed Golden to dart home to give Pearland its first lead. (2-1, Pearland — bottom 3rd)

--DeLeon scored on a wild pitch (1-1, Pearland —bottom 3rd)

-- San Benito's bats don't waste any time. After loading the bases, Senior Kylie Sanchez drove home senior Bethany Aguilar with no outs. (1-0, San Benito — top 1st)

5A STATE SEMIFINALS

Final: New Braunfels Canyon 2, Colleyville Heritage 0

--Sophomore LF Markaylee Maldonado hits a two-run triple to the wall for NB Canyon, but gets thrown out at home trying for the inside-the-park home run. (2-0, bottom sixth)

--Colleyville Heritage softball has never been to a state championship. This is its first state appearance since 1998.

--A pitching duel has taken over the 5A semifinals. Canyon's Haley Carmona has allowed two hits and no runs with two strikeouts. Lindsey McConnell, Heritage junior, has five strikeouts, two walks and one hit allowed through five.(0-0, bottom 6th inning)

--Luna Flores, Colleyville Heritage sophomore, mashed a double to left field to snap Canyon pitcher Haley Carmona's no-hitter bid (0-0, fourth inning)

Final: Montgomery Lake Creek (43-1) def. Frisco Heritage (34-4-1) 9-0

Florida-bound Ava Brown dealt 10 strikeouts in a complete game shutout as the defending champs and nation's No. 1 ranked team coasted into the finals. Brown only walked one batter and gave up three hits without allowing a run.
