KJ Lacey commits to Texas: Saraland (Alabama) quarterback picks Longhorns over Auburn, Florida State, others

The nation's No. 5 quarterback in the class of 2025 is heading to Texas

Texas has its first commit in the fold for the class of 2025, and it’s a big one.

Saraland (Alabama) four-star quarterback KJ Lacey announced his commitment to Texas on Saturday, picking the Longhorns over Auburn, Alabama, Florida State and others.

The 6-foot-1, 180-pound signal caller is the nation’s No. 5 quarterback and No. 80 overall prospect in the class of 2025, per the On3 consensus rankings.

After landing five-star Arch Manning in the class of 2023, the Longhorns currently have one quarterback, three-star Trey Owens of Cy-Fair (Tex.), committed for 2024.

Lacey gives Texas its man at quarterback — and first commit — for 2025. And with Lacey on board, Texas and head coach Steve Sarkisian now have a highly-touted commit who is capable of doing some recruiting of his own.

Lacey is teammates at Saraland with five-star receiver Ryan Williams, the No. 4 overall prospect in the class of 2025. The elite receiver is currently committed to Alabama, but perhaps Lacey’s decision will have Williams reconsidering Texas.

Either way, Lacey's commitment provides some momentum for the Longhorns as they begin to build out their 2025 recruiting class.
