North Shore (Texas) mourns high school football player killed in house party shooting

A Texas high school student and football player was killed in a shooting at a house party in the Houston area, the Harris County Sheriff's Office confirmed on Sunday.

North Shore High School senior Jarvon Coles, 18, was pronounced dead of a gunshot wound late Saturday night after law enforcement responded to an incident at a party in a rented Airbnb in Humble, a suburb of Houston.

First responders found Coles, who was initially believed to have passed out in the yard at the house party experiencing a seizure and attempted to treat him with CPR. Emergency medical services determined he had been shot, and he was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

"Gone too soon," Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said in a Twitter/X post, calling the incident an act of "senseless violence." "Our condolences go out to his family, friends and the (Galena Park ISD) community."

Two shooters, Gonzalez said, are believed to have intentionally fired from "about one block away" in the direction of the house hosting the party.

Coles played outside linebacker for the nationally ranked Mustangs, who finished UIL 6A Division I state runners up in December. His grandfather and guardian Braxton Coles told local news outlets Coles had a 4.1 GPA and planned to play college football at Lamar. 

"Parents, please keep your kids close. No matter how hard you try, you can't save them," Braxton Coles said to KHOU-11 News in Houston.

The tragic news reverberated throughout the North Shore and greater Texas high school football community Sunday.

"Words can't even explain the feeling," Mustangs quarterback Kaleb Bailey said in a Twitter post with a highlight video of Coles attached. "... I just wanted to see you in the best position to be successful."

Added North Shore offensive line coach Kyle Herridge: "You cannot measure the impact he had on and off the field in our program. Truly an incredible human being. Prayers needed for his family, our student athletes, our staff and the entire North Shore community."

Support and condolences from neighboring coaches and programs poured out after the news broke. 

"Praying for (North Shore football), the family, friends, teachers and community that Jarvon Coles graced with his presence," Humble football coach Robert Murphy said. "Kid was always a class act when we played him. Praying that justice will be served."
