WF West's Drea Brumfield accomplishes one important goal by becoming school's career scoring leader

BUCKLEY - Sharp-shooting W.F. West High School wing player Drea Brumfield isn't brash or even self-promoting.

But the Pepperdine University signee knew what she was on the verge of Thursday night.

And when that clinching 3-pointer left her hand and hit nothing but net midway through the second quarter, Brumfield accomplished a lifelong goal by becoming the Bearcats' all-time leading scorer.

Third-ranked W.F. West also got out of No. 8 White River's gymnasium with a 51-29 non-league victory.

The 6-foot-3 senior led the way with a team-high 17 points, including four 3-pointers - three of which came in the second quarter to set the school record.

"That is really cool for her," third-year W.F. West girls coach Kyle Karnofski said. "She has earned it."

There was some talk Brumfield would try and erase Bri Thompson's program mark of 1,161 points earlier this week at Aberdeen. But since the game got out of hand - and no spectators were allowed in - she finished seven points short of taking over the record.

On Thursday, her parents, grandparents and siblings were all in at White River to see if she could do it.

Things started slowly - she misfired on her only shot attempt in the first quarter as the Hornets grabbed a 6-5 lead.

But after Brumfield heated up, the Bearcats began to pull away.

She sank three 3-pointers in a 2:14 span. The final one from the right-center arc with 5:21 to go in the first half not only gave W.F. West a 15-8 lead, it brought a smile to Brumfield's face.

Seconds later, she walked over to the bench where she was heartily congratulated for becoming the scoring queen.

"I am very grateful I have teammates that get me the ball in the right places," Brumfield said. "I couldn't do it without them. That is the only reason I can score."

Brumfield added eight third-quarter points, capped by a jumper at the 1:14 mark, that extended the Bearcats' lead to 35-17.

After the game, White River coach Chris Gibson, who coached Brumfield's mother, Angie, at Franklin Pierce in the 1990s, presented the teenager the game ball for her accomplishment.

"He is a classy guy," Karnofski said. "I really appreciated that.

"She is a good basketball player, but she is a great kid. She is going to do great things at the next level. I am just proud of her. That is a cool accomplishment. A lot of people say they want to (become the school's all-time leading scorer), but only one gets to."

White River ninth grader Vivian Kingston led all scorers with 18 points and 10 rebounds.
