No stars? Sixth-ranked Rainier Beach boys proving to be consummate team in win over No. 9 Mount Tahoma (photos, highlights)

TACOMA - The sixth-ranked Rainier Beach Vikings have heard all the loud analysis.

Cannot win without an all-state caliber go-to playmaker?

Nah, incorrect.

Five different players scored in the fourth quarter, including key free throws by Myles Daymon, Nahmier Robinson and Jaelin Green in the final 42.8 seconds, and Rainier Beach held off host No. 9 Mount Tahoma, 67-65, in non-league action Monday night.

With the victory, the Vikings are now 11-1 - with Metro League wins over Seattle Prep and West Seattle to their name.

"In the beginning, people counted us out, saying, 'Rainier Beach isn’t this, or Rainier Beach isn’t that,'" said longtime assistant coach David King, who was in the lead chair for under-the-weather coach Mike Bethea on Monday. "Talk is cheap. Playing is what the real results come down to."

Asjon Anderson led all scorers for Mount Tahoma with 37 points on 11-of-27 shooting - his ninth game of the season with 30 or more points.

But Rainier Beach forced back-to-back turnovers, getting layups by Daymon and DeShonne Royster to break away for a 62-55 lead with 1:09 to go - and held on from there.

"Sometimes, it is difficult to determine who to play," King said. "But at the end of the day, one of the things we are learning is how to root for each other."
