Chicago Bears select Kyler Gordon at No. 39 in 2022 NFL Draft to bolster shaky secondary

Kyler Gordon didn't wait long Friday to hear his name drafted as he went in the second round - No. 39 overall - to the Chicago Bears.

Gordon, an Archbishop Murphy product who is coming off an all-Pacific-10 Conference campaign with the Washington Huskies, could be an immediate contributor now as the highest draft pick at cornerback on the roster.

Two years ago, the Bears drafted Jayon Johnson, out of Utah, with the No. 50 overall pick. He is the projected starting left cornerback for Chicago heading into the 2022 season.

Chicago gave up 31 passing touchdowns a year ago, tied for third-worst in the league. Gordon's presence should help.

"Gordon't agility and acceleration are a nice fit in Chicago," said Rob Rang, NFL draft analyst for Fox Sports. "He's going to get challenged by the wide receiver and quarterback talent in that division (NFC North), but has the confidence to handle it."

The last Archbishop Murphy graduate taken in the NFL Draft was Shiloh Keo, a defensive back who went to Houston in the fifth round in 2011. He played six seasons for four different franchises, and won a Super Bowl title with Denver.

Trent McDuffie, Gordon's defensive backfield teammate with the Huskies, went to Kansas City, which traded up to pick him at No. 21 on the first round Thursday night.
