Top 2022 marks in Washington high school girls track and field: Small-school underclassman has top sprint times
For all of you used to that unbridled elite speed in WIAA girls track coming from bigger-school athletes - well, things are a little different this spring.
The top sprinter in Washington isn't from Tahoma, Rainier Beach or Kamiakin.
She runs for Bear Creek, a Class 1A program in Redmond. And her name is Braelyn Baker, just a sophomore.
"She is a faithful person," first-year Bear Creek track coach Ben Benso said. "She runs for Christ, runs for school and for her community. That drives her to succeed."
Two weeks ago, Baker not only set the girls' 100-meter record at the Eason Invitational - 11.87 seconds - she continued to hold the state's top time.
And last weekend at the Shoreline Invitational, she lowered her top mark in the 200 - 24.71.
"She is a very dedicated athlete," Benson said. "Often times, she trains herself to get better."
A big reason behind Baker's development was joining the Redmond Sprint Club and being coached by Carlos Fontenot Jr.
But Baker also had natural quick twitch - and she showed that off in an event she had never tried before.
After one day of practicing the 300-meter hurdles, Baker went out and ran it during a meet - and went 46.13, which is not only tops in 1A, she is ranked No. 7 overall in the state.
"It was crazy to watch," Benson said.
Baker's goals are to qualify for the state meet in the 100, 200, 400 and long jump.
