Hannah Dickinson, Lakeside of Seattle multi-sport star, is SBLive's Class 3A Senior Athlete of the Year

The reigning Class 3A girls soccer player of the year is headed off to play goalkeeper at USC, but Dickinson also was a key cog in basketball and lacrosse with the Lions

Welcome to a continuing tradition at SBLive Washington – honoring the WaFd Bank 2021-22 senior male and female athletes of the year for each classification.

Because the SBLive crew gets so immersed in specific sports seasons, it is nice to take a step back to pick a statewide honor from a broader perspective.

The criteria isn’t too expansive: The starting point is finding seniors who are all-league/all-state performers in two or more sports. Totality of career is also a factor. So is administrator/coach/fan recommendation.

Enjoy as we honor some of Washington’s top multi-sport senior athletes!

It's not all that often a hanging house garment provides long-running inspiration.

At every stop in youth soccer, Hannah Dickinson was proving to be an unstoppable force at goalkeeper. She even earned a spot with the OL Reign Academy, working directly with former MLS goalkeeper Doug Herrick.

She easily could have drowned out the pull of high school athletics enrolling at Lakeside of Seattle and stuck to club soccer full time.

But that garment ...

Her father's letterman jacket.

"It is stacked with awards," said Dickinson, a third-generation student-athlete at Lakeside. "I wanted to be the person to get 12 varsity letters. I wanted to be part of the cliche sports tradition ... because high school sports, it is a different kind of bond."

And Dickinson, a USC soccer signee, did just that by earning 12 varsity letters in soccer, basketball and lacrosse.

And yet, even with all the pre-high school soccer accolades, Dickinson had to wait her turn as a ninth grader, starting as the backup to sophomore Ashlyn Ryan.

"She did not like it, and was noisy about it," said Lakeside girls soccer coach Derrek Falor, a former longtime college coach at WWU and Cleveland State. "She had to earn it."

Later in the 2018 season, after Ryan was injured, Dickinson was thrust into the lead role - and never relinquished it the rest of her career.

A two-time Metro League player of the year, Dickinson was the key force behind the Lions' run to a Class 3A championship last fall. She was also selected as the classification's state MVP.

Falor praised Dickinson's physical and ball-distribution skills, but said as a senior, her "leadership and organization of the defense came at a really high level."

"She has such an amazing athletic brain," Falor said.

She's also very in tune to her family tradition at Lakeside. Her father, Chris, was a standout basketball and football player into the early 1990s before going on to play at Princeton. And brother, Jack, also played football for the Lions, and is now at Williams College (mom, Ashleigh Robertson was also a standout volleyball player at the University of Washington).

"I watched my brother play a lot," Dickinson said. "And he has a letterman jacket, too.

"I want one, and that was my goal as a freshman. I just haven't ordered it yet. But I am going to get one so I can keep it around for my kids to see."
