Talk about not waiting to jump on an opportunity to play at a level of NCAA Division I football.

Do-everything Yelm High School wide receiver Kyler Ronquillo did not.

The two-time all-state performer gave Big Sky Conference member Portland State University a verbal commitment Wednesday - while still on the Vikings' campus during an official visit.

"My thinking was they believed in me for a pretty long time," Ronquillo said. "I really liked the connection I had with the coaching staff ... so why would I waste any more time?"

The 5-foot-10, 175-pound athlete is the two-time 3A South Sound Conference player of the year in football, leading his team to the WIAA quarterfinals, losing to Marysville-Pilchuc.

He also captured the state decathlon championship in June.

He is ranked a three-star recruit by 247Sports.com - and the state's No. 35 overall prospect in the class of 2023.

"I think the FCS level is the perfect fit for him to have a great career," said Jason Ronquillo, Kyler's coach and father. "They have a vision for him, a fit in their system and have loved his passion for the game."
