Second-ranked Vikings score off turnover right before halftime, then score 43 second-half points in defeating No. 1 Grizzlies, 57-17, in 4A Wesco showdown

Each week, SBLive ranks the top 25 teams across the state of Washington, regardless of classification. Here’s a look at how those teams fared in games played in Week 9 of the 2022 high school football season.

HOW THE TOP 25 FARED — OCT. 29

1. YELM TORNADOS 9-0 (3A) beat Gig Harbor, 50-14 (Thu.)

Five minutes into second quarter, Tornados trailed, 7-6. Then they scored 29 points in a row to close half, including two TDs by WR Kyler Ronquillo (265 all-purpose yards).

2. EASTSIDE CATHOLIC CRUSADERS 8-0 on bye

As champion of 3A Metro League, Crusaders earned week off - and will enter district playoffs next week.

3. GLACIER PEAK GRIZZLIES 7-2 (4A) lose to No. 7 Lake Stevens, 57-17

Crazy to think that Glacier Peak controlled game much of first half. QB River Lien's final-minute interception opened the floodgates, which spelled disaster for Griz.

4. BELLEVUE WOLVERINES 6-2 (3A) beat Hazen, 59-0

That is six consecutive games scoring 40 or more points. Not by coincidence, the Wolverines are on a six-game winning streak. If Wing-T is in high gear, they win.

5. O'DEA FIGHTING IRISH 7-1 (3A) on bye

As runner-up in 3A Metro League, Irish earned week off - and will enter district playoffs next week.

6. LYNDEN LIONS 9-0 (2A) beat Anacortes, 23-13

Anacortes scored first, but stout defense – including interceptions from Kobe Baar and Troy Petz – shut the door on Seahawks' offense the rest of the way.

7. LAKE STEVENS VIKINGS 7-2 (4A) beat No. 3 Glacier Peak, 57-17

DB Isaac Redford's interception, then QB Kolton Matson's 58-yard TD to WR Cassidy Belong-Banks - all in few seconds - was fuel in Viks' ninth consecutive 4A Wesco title.

8. LINCOLN ABES 9-0 (3A) beat No. 16 Spanaway Lake, 38-19

When was last time the Abes posted an undefeated regular season? It was 2015 - coach Masaki Matsumoto's first year. This team set up for long postseason run.

The Lancers claimed the 4A NPSL crown once again thanks to four opening-quarter touchdowns in a rout of Mount Rainier.

11. MONROE BEARCATS 8-1 (3A) lose to No. 19 Ferndale, 34-28

Despite scoring twice on kickoff returns, Monroe really lost this game on offense with four turnovers, all by QB Blake Springer (three INT, one fumble lost at goal line).

14. CAMAS PAPERMAKERS 6-3 (4A) beat Battle Ground, 42-0

16. SPANAWAY LAKE SENTINELS 6-2 (3A) lose to No. 8 Lincoln of Tacoma, 38-19

No defense has slowed down Gabarri Johnson all year - and Sentinels could not only slow him down, they could not keep up on offense, either, in 3A PCL title showdown.

17. SKYLINE SPARTANS 6-2 (4A) lose to Woodinville, 17-7

Leave it to ol' Wayne Maxwell to devise a scheme to upend this year's 4A KingCo winner as Spartans were shut down on offense, including two turnovers.

18. GRAHAM-KAPOWSIN EAGLES 7-2 (4A) beat Bethel, 34-14 (Thu.)

Ends regular season on four-game winning streak as electric QB Daveon Superales-to-WR Jabez Woods connection nets two more touchdowns.

19. FERNDALE GOLDEN EAGLES 7-2 (3A) beat No. 11 Monroe, 34-28

Opportunistic defense (goal-line stand) led to sudden big-play offense (Isaiah Carlson's 94-yard TD run) that Golden Eagles needed to wrap up 3A Wesco crown.

20. STANWOOD SPARTANS 7-1 (3A) beat Snohomish, 42-21

Rebounded this week by reigniting Wing-T attack, led by RB Canyon Bumgarner's three touchdown runs. Older brother, Ryder, also got in the act with a rushing score.

As third-place finisher in 3A Metro League, Vikings earned week off - and will enter district playoffs next week

22. NORTH KITSAP VIKINGS 8-1 (2A) beat Olympic, 42-0

While loud noise in 2A is coming from up north - the West Sound's top team quietly puts offenses to sleep behind dominant defensive line. Wins 2A Olympic again.

QB Jake Kennedy's three total touchdowns and a Skyview trick play was recipe the Storm needed to corral Union - and 4A GSHL's final playoff berth.

24. KENNEWICK LIONS 7-2 (3A) beat Hermiston, 34-12

A pick-6 from LB Maddox Suitonu midway through fourth quarter gave Lions breathing room (27-12) - and then Dane McClure's punt-return TD put game on ice.

25. EASTLAKE WOLVES 6-2 (4A) beat North Creek, 28-24

Two turnovers by defense in final 42 seconds preserved frantic fourth-quarter comeback from 10 points down as Wolves lock up 4A KingCo runner-up finish.
