Congratulations to Freeman's Boen Phelps for being voted SBLive’s WaFd Bank Washington High School Athlete of the Week for Jan. 23-28!

The senior point guard had quite a week - in two sports. After signing with Boise State University for football, Phelps put up big performance against Newport (game-high 31 points) and Riverside (22 points), both wins in 1A Northeast action.

Phelps received 82.7% of the vote, beating out Enumclaw's Carter Derosier, who finished second with 6.8%.

WASHINGTON NOMINEES

Adam Davis, Tahoma boys basketball: The junior forward broke out for a game-high 24 points, including 18 in the second half and overtime as the No. 7 Bears won at No. 5 Skyline in a non-league game. Davis also hit the game-tying 3-pointer with five seconds remaining to put the game into an extra period.

Carter DeRosier, Enumclaw boys basketball: Scored a game-high 23 points in an upset win over then-No. 10 Foss to take control of 2A SPSL.

Emmett Fenz, Ellensburg boys basketball: The senior forward broke a 53-yard school record by scoring a career-high 43 points in a 2A CWAC overtime victory Saturday over East Valley of Yakima. And in a loss to Ephrata on Friday, he 25 points and 13 rebounds.

Davis Fogle, Anacortes boys basketball: Nearly single-handedly willed his team to an upset of top-ranked Lynden, pouring in a game-high 42 points in a Northwest Conference loss to the Lions.

Brooklynn Haywood, Union girls basketball: The 4A GSHL’s leading scorer as a ninth grader registered the state’s top scoring game in 2022-23 - 50 points on 18-of-34 field goals - in a win over Class 2B contender La Conner. It is also a Titans’ single-game record (and comes after earlier-week games of 26 and 27 points).

Kaylia Heidelberg, Peninsula girls basketball: It was a big week for the Seahawks’ junior captain. She rolled up 25 points (including four 3-pointers) in the team’s 3A SSC showdown win over North Thurston, then contributed a season-high 30 points (including six 3-pointers) in a victory over River Ridge.

Cavin Holden, R.A. Long boys basketball: Needing 32 points to tie Adam Perry’s all-time school scoring mark (1,639 points), the guard was better than that - 35 points - to break the record in a 2A GSHL win over Hudson’s Bay. Later in the week, he had 40 points against Columbia River - his sixth game this season of 40 or more points.

Luke Holecek, East Valley of Spokane boys basketball: Sank eight 3-pointers and finished with a season-high 38 points (15-of-22 shooting from the floor) and eight rebounds in a 2A GSL loss to Pullman.

Isabel Sullivan, Eastside Catholic girls basketball: The Nevada signee continues to put up stellar numbers in the Metro League - 26 points and 15 rebounds in a win over Ballard; 26 points and 12 rebounds in a win over Holy Names and 29 points and 10 rebounds in a loss against West Seattle.

Toby Trichler, Sultan boys basketball: Scored 30 points in a win over Eastside Prep that put the Turks in a tie for first place in the Emerald Sound Conference Coho Division

Jenna Villa, Arlington girls basketball: For a while in the Eagles’ 3A Wesco showdown against Stanwood, it was the WSU signee doing all the scoring. He tallied 19 of the team’s 21 first-half points - and finished with a game-high 29 points, including five 3-pointers in a home victory.

Kylie Waltermeyer, Tumwater girls basketball: Back in the lineup after an extended injury layoff (back), the senior guard scored a game-high 20 points, including two 3-pointers, as the Thunderbirds won at W.F. West to force a first-place tie in the 2A Evergreen Conference.

Karlee VonMoos, Adna girls basketball: The Pirates’ post player dominated against then-No. 2 Mossyrock (2B) by scoring 17 points (8-of-14 FGs) and pulling down a program-record 20 rebounds in fifth-ranked Adna’s victory. It also avenged an earlier-season loss.

Kierra Wilcox, Evergreen of Vancouver girls bowling: Led the way with a three-game 629-pin total to claim the individual Class 3A Southwest District title and help the Plainsmen claim the team title.
