Congratulations to Mark Morris' Makenzie Henthorn for being voted SBLive’s WaFd Bank Washington High School Athlete of the Week for April 17-April 22!

One of the state's up-and-coming pitchers was fantastic all-round in the Monarchs' 2A GSHL victory over Woodland. Henthorn struck out 16 hitters in going the distance, and produced a late two-run single on offense in a 5-3 victory.

Henthorn received 50.2% of the vote, beating out Kentwood softball slugger Juliana Ursino, who finished second with 29.1%.

WASHINGTON NOMINEES

Cassandra Atkins, Federal Way girls track and field: After a second-place finish in the long jump the day before, Atkins outdid herself in the triple jump with a jump of 40-01.25 that was good for first place at the Oregon Relays.

Bryson Bishop, West Valley of Spokane baseball: In a no-hitter against East Valley of Spokane, Bishop struck out 12 hitters, He also notched three hits at the plate, including a home run in a 2A/3A/4A GSL win.

Jacob Bresnahan, Sumner baseball: Against defending state champion Olympia, Bresnahan was nearly unhittable, giving up only one hit while striking out 19 of 23 batters faced in seven innings pitched in the 4A SPSL showdown.

Kadence Burleson, Evergreen of Vancouver softball: Had a huge day in the batter’s box going 3-for-4 with two home runs, six RBI and four runs scored in a 16-2 3A GSHL win over Mountain View.

Jessie Gilbert, Ocosta softball: Finished her complete-game effort against Toledo with 19 strikeouts while also tallying two hits at the plate, including a solo home run in the non-league victory.

Connor Keeton, Pe Ell-Willapa Valley baseball: Struck out six batters in a five-inning, no-hit effort in a non-league game against Mossyrock. Also drove in two runs on one hit.

Jonathan Lieb, Olivia Ferraro, Jacob Marchesseault and Charlotte Cullen, Mead track and field: The quartet of Lieb, Ferraro, Marchesseault and Cullen made some history in Eugene at the Oregon Relays, setting a national record in the mixed 4x800 relay with a time of 8:44:74.

Staely Moore, Anacortes baseball: In a game between the Northwest Conference’s top two teams, Moore was dominant on the mound, striking out seven and not allowing a hit against Mount Vernon.

Alex Overbay, Tumwater baseball: In Tumwater’s biggest game of the season yet against 2A EvCo rival W.F. West, Overbay showed up big, throwing a complete-game shutout, surrendering only one hit and striking out 11 hitters in a 10-0 win.

Andrew Shirley, Curtis boys track and field: Had himself a day at the Oregon Relays, winning the boys pole vault with a personal-best of 15-11 to take over the top overall mark in Washington, and was part of the 4x100 relay team (41.29 seconds) that erased Garfield's all-time record of 41.34.

Abby Surowiec, Cascade of Everett softball: Surowiec more than did her job on both sides, throwing a six-strikeout no-hitter in the circle while also going 3-for-3 at the plate with a double, three runs scored and an RBI in 3A Wesco action.

Juliana Ursino, Kentwood softball: Went 5-for-5 at the plate with three doubles, a triple and a home run with five RBI and two stolen bases in NPSL wins over Kent Meridian and Auburn.
