Yelm's Trevontay Smith is SBLive's WaFd Bank Class 3A Senior Athlete of the Year

University of Washington track and field signee starred on football field, basketball court and jumping runway, bringing home WIAA titles in two sports as senior

Welcome to a continuing tradition at SBLive Washington – honoring the WaFd Bank 2022-23 senior male and female athletes of the year for each classification.

Because the SBLive crew gets so immersed in specific sports seasons, it is nice to take a step back to pick a statewide honor from a broader perspective.

The criteria isn’t too expansive: The starting point is finding seniors who are all-league/all-state performers in two or more sports. Totality of career is also a factor. So is administrator/coach/fan recommendation.

Enjoy as we honor some of Washington’s top multi-sport senior athletes!

Trevontay Smith, Yelm, 3A Boys Senior Athlete of the Year

It's hard to believe Trevontay Smith joined the Yelm track and field team just more than a year  ago.

And despite not having as much training and experience as everyone else, Smith found success, winning back-to-back WIAA championships in the Class 3A triple jump.

Smith attributed the quick success in track and field to the other sports he played.

"I guess playing sports throughout all these years really helped with my athleticism," Smith said.

He can add SBLive WA's Class 3A senior male athlete of the year for 2022-23 to his list of final-year accolades.

His standout performances in the WIAA triple jump (personal-best 50 feet, 41/2 inches) at Mount Tahoma Stadium in May landed Smith an opportunity to keep at it in college, only a year after he joined his high school team.

Smith is headed to the University of Washington next on a track and field scholarship.

"I just can't wait until I get to compete and show what I can actually do," Smith said. "I don't have that much experience in track. I don't have as much practice as other people have and once I get that in I know I'm going to be a top jumper."

Yelm football coach Jason Ronquillo said Smith enjoys the hard work that comes with being a good athlete.

"As a pure athlete, he's only scratching the surface – he's what you typically call a late bloomer," Ronquillo said. "He really came into his own his senior year, but is nowhere close to being finished. Over the next few years he's going to really blossom."

With a total of three state championships earned, Smith said he doesn't think a senior year gets much better.

"I think I had a top-tier athletic senior year," Smith said. "I'm just happy I've become successful in sports."
