CIF State basketball championships: Top stars, best performances on day two (3/9/2024)

Harvard-Westlake, Etiwanda repeat as Open Division champions on Saturday night.

Here’s a quick look at some of the top stars and memorable performances from the second day of the CIF State basketball championships.

GROSSMONT vs. ST. BERNARD’S (EUREKA)

Laila Florus, Madelyn Shanahan, Samantha Sundberg (St. Bernard's): The trio of Florus, Shanahan, Sundberg combined for 45 points and 42 rebounds against Grossmont.

Aakash Price, Grossmont: Price had eight points, eight rebounds and six steals in a loss to St. Bernard's.

CHATSWORTH vs. MONTEREY

Kavon Collins, Monterey: Collins led Monterey with 22 points, making eight of his 14 shot attempts.

Joshua Roth, Monterey: Roth had 19 points and eight rebounds, making five of 10 three-point attempts.

Alijah Arenas, Chatsworth: Arenas scored 44 points, becoming only the second boys basketball player to surpass 40 points in a CIF State championship game.

HARVARD-WESTLAKE vs. COLFAX

Angelina Habis, Harvard-Westlake: Habis had 19 points, seven rebounds and three steals against Colfax.

Deana Thompson, Harvard-Westlake: Thompson had 18 points, six rebounds, four assists and four steals to beat Colfax.

Valentina Guerrero, Harvard-Westlake: Guerrero had a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds to become state champions.

Juliette James, Colfax: James led Colfax with 18 points and 11 rebounds in a loss to Colfax.

BAKERSFIELD CENTENNIAL vs. OAKLAND TECH

Ardarius Grayson, Oakland Tech: Grayson had 20 points, 12 rebounds, seven assists and five steals to help the Bulldogs win a state title.

Caleb Rollins, Oakland Tech: Rollins scored 20 points off the bench, making seven of his 11 shot attempts.

Rippen Gill, Centennial: Gill led the Golden Hawks with 22 points and added five rebounds, converting on seven of his eight free throw attempts.

ARCHBISHOP MITTY vs. ETIWANDA

Aliyahna “Puff’ Morris, Etiwanda: Morris led Etiwanda with 20 points and five assists to repeat as Open Division state champions.

Kennedy Smith, Etiwanda: Smith contributed across the board for Etiwanda, finishing with 15 points, five rebounds, four blocks, two assists and two steals.

McKenna Woliczko, Archbishop Mitty: Woliczko had 14 points, 10 rebounds, six assists and three steals for the Monarchs.

HARVARD-WESTLAKE vs. SALESIAN

Trent Perry, Harvard-Westlake: Perry stepped up late, finishing with 17 points four rebounds and two blocks to repeat as a state champion.

Robert Hinton, Harvard-Westlake: Hinton finished with a game-high 19 points, shooting seven of eight from the field.

Elias Obenyah, Salesian: Obenyah finished with 14 points, eight rebounds and three assists, leading the Pride in all three categories.
