No. 6 La Costa Canyon @ No. 2 Cathedral Catholic
The season opener in 2018 marked the first time that these programs have played, with the Mavericks coming out on top, 19-7. Mavericks Linebacker Ozzie Nicholas will need to have his defense ready as the Dons return Quarterback DJ Ralph plus the best offensive line in San Diego.
No. 13 Eastlake @ No. 10 Steele Canyon
The Titans and Cougars haven’t played since 2012, which was the finale of a 6-year series that saw Eastlake win all 6 games. However, the Cougars are 21-7 over the past two years with a League title, CIF Title, and State Title to their name during that time. Steele Canyon returns 9 starters on defense plus star running back Wes Neely. The Titans had two of their best offensive weapons transfer out in the offseason and will need some younger players to step up.
No. 12 Granite Hills @ No. 14 Poway
The Eagles and Titans, who started their football programs in 1960 and 1961, respectively, have had several good battles over the years with Poway having won 5 of the 8 matchups. The Titans will be looking for revenge after last season’s 17-13 loss to Granite Hills to open up the year. Granite Hills will look to contain the run as Poway Running Back Josh Butler looks to start fast in his senior season.
Los Alamitos @ No. 7 Torrey Pines
The Falcons and Griffins have never met but have similar programs that have sustained long periods of success in their respective sections while also having sent multiple players to the NFL. Torrey Pines only returns two offensive starters and will rely heavily on their defense to make plays. Los Alamitos is expected to play two quarterbacks, Senior Cade McConnell and Freshman Malachi Nelson.
San Clemente @ No. 9 Oceanside
The Pirates and the Tritons, who are only separated by
Marine Base Camp Pendleton, will open the regular season against each other for
the 4th consecutive year. Oceanside Running Back Kavika Tua will
have his work cut out trying to navigate against a tough and experienced San
Clemente defense.
