Having turned the corner to 2024 we now have enough data to analyze the 2023-24 high school basketball season and that leads us to our first 2023-24 Georgia High School Girls Basketball Power 25 rankings.
The top two teams in the state of Georgia are crystal clear at this point. Hebron Christian and Grayson have dominated in-state competition so far this season and look like two sure-fire state champions for their respective classifications.
GEORGIA HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS BASKETBALL POWER 25 (1/10/2024)
1. Hebron Christian (13-2)
What’s not to like about the Lions? After winning the Class AAA state championship last season, they’ve returned with an even better squad. They’re 13-2, nationally ranked and might not lose a game the rest of the way.
2. Grayson (15-0)
If this was any other year, the Rams would be the sure-fire No. 1 team in the state. And they still might be, but given Hebron Christian’s schedule and what the national polls are saying, we’re slotting them into a very respectable No. 2 position. The Rams have a star-studded roster and are the clear favorites to win the Class 7A state championship.
3. Mount Paran Christian (14-2)
There are 2-3 teams that could make a case for the No. 3 spot behind Hebron Christian and Grayson. For now, that spot is going to belong to Mount Paran Christian, who has played Grayson the toughest of anyone so far. The Eagles lost to the Rams in overtime back in mid November, their only loss to a team from the state of Georgia this season.
4. Wesleyan (11-1)
The Wolves have lost just one game this season and it came against none other than Grayson, who blitzed them 69-49 back in late November. The Wolves are loaded, much like Hebron Christian, Grayson and Mount Paran Christian are. But as of now, they’re one notch below those three teams.
5. River Ridge (11-4)
The Knights were arguably the best team in the state last season after winning the Class 6A state championship. They’re still very good, and they come in ranked No. 4 in the first Power 25 rankings of the season. They suffered a close 69-65 loss to Wesleyan earlier this season.
6. St. Francis (13-5)
The Knights come in at No. 6 after jumping out to a 13-5 record to start the year. They have played a very difficult schedule and gave Hebron Chrisitan all they wanted last week in a 66-57 loss. They lost to Wesleyan by a similar score a month ago, proving to be not that far off of what the best teams in the state are.
7. Buford (13-1)
The Wolves opened up the season with a loss to Sequoyah, but haven’t lost since. At the time, their loss looked somewhat surprising. And while it’s a game the Wolves should have won, Sequoyah has made it look less bad thanks to their 12-5 record. The Wolves have a star in Ava Watson and they will go as far as she takes them.
8. Union Grove (15-1)
The Wolverines were battle-tested last season with a very competitive schedule, and that’s paying dividends this season with their 15-1 start. Their only loss came at the hands of Hebron Christian (surprise, surprise) and they have a quality win over McEachern.
9. Norcross (12-4)
The Blue Devils come in at No. 9 in the first Power 25 rankings of the year after their 12-4 start. They might not have quite as much fire power as they did last year, but they’ve been competitive. They were in a game with River Ridge, an eventual 51-43 loss, and they were blown out by Hebron Christian.
10. Pickens (17-0)
The Dragons round out the Top 10 thanks to their 17-0 start. Their start is fairly similar to that of last year’s, where they started 13-1 with a weaker schedule. The Dragons haven’t played anyone of note, but their 17-0 start has to be respected to a certain extent. We’ll find out what they’re really made of on Friday night when they play host to No. 4 Wesleyan.
11. Baldwin (11-2)
There is a lot to like about the Braves. Their only two losses have come against Top 10 teams in St. Francis (65-60) and Norcross (51-40). They’re still in search for a signature win, but they’re more than deserving of the No. 11 spot in the Power 25.
12. McEachern (10-7)
The Indians come in at No. 12 with a 10-7 record. They’ve played a difficult schedule, and they’ve gotten a win over a Top 10 team in Norcross. Their only two in-state losses have come against Hebron Christian and Union Grove. We’ll see how they fare against Grayson on the 20th.
13. Marist (14-1)
The War Eagles have very quietly put together a strong start to the season at 14-1. Their lone loss came against Mount Paran Christian, a game they only lost by seven points. They’ve dominated their competition in every other game they’ve played and clock in at No. 13 in the rankings.
14. North Paulding (14-4)
The Wolfpack find themselves in a tough spot in Class 7A. They’re 14-4, but haven’t stood a chance against the top teams in the classification. They were blown out by both Grayson and Buford, and they didn’t fare well at all against River Ridge, either. That said, they’re still a good team when compared to the rest of the state.
15. Carrollton (12-2)
The Trojans come in at No. 15 with their only two losses coming against Grayson (64-39) and McEachern (46-38). This seems like the perfect ranking for a team that can compete with the likes of Buford, Norcross and McEachern for the 2nd or 3rd spot in Class 7A, but not for the top spot that belongs to Grayson.
16. Langston Hughes (11-2)
The Panthers haven’t played much of anyone so far this season, but they’re a good team, nonetheless. They opened up the season with a narrow 45-42 loss to North Paulding, and followed that up with a loss to Hoover (Al.). They’ve since won their last 11 in a row.
17. Hardaway (11-4)
The Hawks are off to an impressive 11-4 start on the year and come in ranked No. 17. Three of their four losses have come against Top 10 teams in River Ridge, Union Grove and Norcross. Their Union Grove loss was by just three points to open the season and they lost to Norcross by five points.
18. North Forsyth (17-0)
The Raiders are a perfect 16-0 on the season and come in at No. 18 in the rankings. They’ve had a couple of scares against Tift County and Dawson County, two good but not great teams, but have taken care of business in the rest. They haven’t played anyone of note so far, and wont for the rest of the regular season.
19. Galloway (9-6)
The Scots have only won nine games, but they’ve played a tough schedule. They lost to Grayson by 15 points to open up the season, which is fairly respectable, and the rest have come against out-of-state opponents.
20. Tift County (11-3)
The Blue Devils won 22 games last year and they’re well on their way to doing that again this year. They’re 11-3 and already have a signature win against North Paulding. They lost to North Forsyth by one point and they lost to Buford by 13 points.
21. Maynard Jackson (12-1)
The Jaguars come in at No. 21 in the first Power 25 rankings of the year after jumping out to an impressive 12-1 start. Their only loss came against North Paulding, and while they haven’t played anyone of note since, they’re a very solid team.
22. Bradwell Institute (14-1)
The Tigers are off to a terrific 14-1 start on the year and they come in at No. 22 in the Power 25. They have a win over Tift County, and their lone loss came at the hands of North Forsyth. Can the Tigers keep it up?
23. Carver-Columbus (9-5)
The Tigers are 9-5 on the year and come in at No. 23 in the first Power 25 rankings of the year. They’ve very quietly played a tough schedule, including games against Buford, Hardaway and Campbell.
24. Campbell (10-6)
The Spartans didn’t have a great start to the season, but they’ve since turned it around a bit. They’ve won six out of their last nine games and will have a huge showdown with Carollton this Friday night that could boost them up the rankings next week with a win.
25. Thomson (13-1)
The Bulldogs are off to a terrific 13-1 start with their lone loss coming against a good Midtown team. They will grab the 25th and final spot in the first Power 25 rankings of the year.
