Solon, Nevada notch signature victories over Class 3A powers

Here are SBLive’s Iowa high school football rankings for the week of Oct. 9:

1. Southeast Polk (7-0) 

Rams surprised many by the manner in which they dominated Waukee 38-0 and outgained the Warriors 406-107. 

2. West Des Moines Dowling (7-0)

Matthew Hanten intercepted two passes and Nick Frerichs picked off one in the Maroons’ 29-0 win over Urbandale.

3. Ankeny (5-2)

Hawks trailed Iowa City Liberty 21-20 after three quarters, but rallied to win 40-21 behind 243 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 21 carries by Caden Henkes.

4. Western Dubuque (6-1)

Grant Glausser carried 18 times for 227 yards and three scores, and the Bobcats led Waterloo East 42-7 at the half before winning 52-29.

5. Van Meter (7-0)

Ben Gordon rushed 15 times for 211 yards and four touchdowns in a 63-6 win over Centerville.

6. Central Lyon/George-Little Rock (7-0)

Class 2A, District 1 title is on the line when the Lions host unbeaten West Lyon on Friday

7. Creston (7-0)

Brennan Hayes carried 14 times for 269 yards and three scores in a 56-14 win over Knoxville, running his season total to 1,042 yards.

8. Ankeny Centennial (4-3)

In a 43-7 win over Des Moines Roosevelt, Elijah Porter rushed 10 times for 171 yards and three touchdowns.

9. Pleasant Valley (6-1)

Coy Kipper ran for two scores, and the Spartans held on for an important 31-28 win over Cedar Falls after leading 24-7 at the half.

10. Cedar Rapids Kennedy (5-2)

Cougars have won five straight after Vincenzo Gianforte threw for 258 yards and four touchdowns in a 44-0 win over Dubuque Hempstead.

11. Bondurant-Farrar (6-1)

Bluejays outgained previously unbeaten Gilbert 425-125 in a resounding 38-7 victory.

12. Lewis Central (5-2)

Brady Hetzel completed 9 of 13 for 176 yards and three TDs with no INTs in a 42-6 win over Winterset.

13. Cedar Rapids Xavier (5-2)

Coleton Beasler-Weber had punt returns of 76 and 70 yards for touchdowns in a 42-0 win over Oskaloosa.

14. ADM (6-1)

Quarterback Aiden Flora carried 25 times for 259 yards and three touchdowns in a 20-13 win over Ballard.

15. North Scott (5-2)

Chase Smith’s 13-yard TD pass to Jerrod Lee helped the Lancers nip upset-minded Clear Creek-Amana, 16-14.

16. Underwood (6-1)

Garrett Luett threw for 245 yards and four TDs, and the Eagles registered their fourth shutout in five games in a 63-0 win over Missouri Valley.

17. Waukee Northwest (5-2)

Wolves raced to a 62-0 halftime lead and scored five rushing TDs and four through the air in a 76-14 win over Ottumwa.

18. Bettendorf (6-1)

Bulldogs bounced back from their first loss with an impressive 63-0 victory over Davenport Central.

19. Solon (6-1)

Cole Carney’s late interception set up Eddie Johnson’s game-winning 1-yard TD run in an emotional 21-14 win over Williamsburg.

20. West Lyon (7-0)

Wildcats lead 2A in defensive average, allowing only 4.6 points per game, as only Lawton-Bronson (12) has reached double digits.

21. Williamsburg (6-1)

Raiders managed only 27 rushing yards on 27 carries in their seven-point loss to Solon.

22. Mount Vernon (6-1)

Evan Brase caught eight passes for 212 yards and two touchdowns in a 45-7 win over Fort Madison.

23. Grundy Center (7-0)

Colin Gordon passed for 166 yards and two touchdowns in a 35-0 win over Alburnett.

24. Nevada (6-1)

Cason Stevenson rushed 18 times for 204 yards and three touchdowns as the Cubs scored a signature 39-20 victory over Harlan Community.

25. Harlan Community (4-3)

Combined records of teams the Cyclones have lost to (Creston, Lewis Central, Nevada) is 18-3.
