Iowa high school boys basketball top stars, best performances (1/29/2024)

Here are some stars from the past week's high school boys basketball games across Iowa.

Emiliano Barrantes, Grand View Christian

The junior, among the state leaders in both categories, scored 28 points and snared 14 rebounds for the Thunder in a 68-39 win over Hampton-Dumont-CAL. The 6-foot-9 forward made half of his 18 shots and added three blocks.

Brody Buck, Madrid

The junior contributed 24 points, four rebounds and four assists as the Tigers, ranked fifth in Class 1A, edged Des Moines Christian, 58-53.

Cam Buffington, Winfield-Mt. Union

The University of Iowa football recruit double-doubled with 23 points and 11 rebounds as the Class 1A third-ranked Wolves downed WACO, 64-56. Abram Edwards also had a double-double for the winners with 11 points and 14 rebounds.

Reid Burkle, Cedar Rapids Prairie

Burkle, a senior, fired in 26 points to go along with five rebounds, four assists, two blocked shots and a steal as the Hawks topped Cedar Rapids Jefferson, 72-45. Burkle was 12-of-16 from the field.

Drake Canavan, Eagle Grove

The senior had 24 points and six rebounds, nailing six 3-pointers in a 68-46 win over West Hancock. The 6-foot-3 Canavan was 8-of-13 from the field and blocked two shots.

Ryan Clair, East Sac County

The sophomore finished with 22 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, two blocks and two steals for the Raiders in a 71-46 win over Sioux Central. East Sac County improved to 12-3 on the season.

Boaz Clark, Roland-Story

The senior hit six 3-pointers and scored a game-high 23 points as the 13-2 Norsemen downed Saydel, 77-40. Clark added two rebounds, two steals and two assists.

Joey Coppola IV, West Des Moines Dowling

Coppola hit for 21 points, leading the Maroons to a 70-46 win over Southeast Polk. Coppola also dished out five assists.

Carter Gruver, Woodbine

The junior was 9-for-12 from the field and scored 23 points, leading the 12-1 Tigers to a 70-27 victory over Fremont-Mills. Gruver also handed out three assists.

Luke Hellige, Holy Trinity

The senior made all nine of his shots en route to a 26-point effort for the 12-4 Crusaders in a 69-20 rout of Van Buren. Five of Hellige’s buckets were 3-pointers.

Hunter Hillman, Saint Ansgar

The senior fired in 32 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in the Saints’ 69-51 victory over Central Springs. The 6-foot-6 Hillman also had three assists, two blocks and two steals.

Tim Hills-Carrier, Waterloo Columbus

The senior nearly had a triple-double, finishing with 21 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists in a 70-61 win over Lone Tree.

Carson Hoogeveen, West Lyon

The junior tossed in 23 points for the Class 2A top-ranked Wildcats in a 74-56 win over rival and defending state champion Central Lyon. Trevor Ciesielski just missed a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds for 16-0 West Lyon.

Brody Lager, Missouri Valley

The senior went over 1,000 points for his career, scoring 24 points for the Big Reds in a 48-44 win over AHSTW. He became just the third player in school history to reach the milestone.

Jackson Lieurance, Cascade

The junior guard broke a school record with 47 points in a 94-75 win over Wilton. Lieurance broke the former record held by current Creighton University coach Greg McDermott. He was 17-of-22 from the field, including 10-for-12 from 3-point range.

Alex Manske, Algona

The junior, a highly sought-after football quarterback, finished with 21 points, nine rebounds and four steals for the Bulldogs in a 64-51 win over Clarion-Goldfield-Dows.

Dylan Marquart, Dunkerton

The junior hit seven 3-pointers and scored 28 points, leading the 13-2 Raiders to a 76-59 win over Sumner-Fredericksburg. Marquart also dished out six assists.

Cael Reichter, North Fayette Valley

The junior charted a double-double with 23 points and 15 rebounds, leading the 13-3 TigerHawks to a 67-56 win over South Winneshiek. The 6-foot-7 Reichter also dished out five assists and blocked five shots.

Franz Reisz, Harlan

The senior posted a double-double, scoring 21 points and grabbing 10 rebounds, in the Cyclones’ 57-43 victory over Glenwood. Reisz was 6-of-7 from the field and 9-of-11 from the free-throw line.

Keegan Soard, South Central Calhoun

The senior battled his way to a double-double of 15 points and 13 rebounds, helping the 12-3 Titans top Newell-Fonda, 68-45.

Cael Stephany, Clear Lake

The senior had the hot hand for Class 3A’s top-ranked team in an 84-59 victory over Fort Dodge St. Edmond. Stephany made seven of nine shots – including six of eight 3-pointers – and scored 20 points as Clear Lake moved to 13-0.

Sawyer Stout, Keota

The senior tossed in 24 points as the Eagles, ranked No. 5 in Class 1A, remained unbeaten at 15-0 with a convincing 89-33 victory over winless Tri-County.

Quinn Street, Osage

Street, a sophomore, poured in 35 points for the once-beaten Blue Devils in a 90-63 victory over Mason City Newman. Street nailed nine 3-pointers in 15 attempts and also had four assists.

Jace Tams, Treynor

The senior contributed 23 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and two steals for the Class 2A No. 8 Cardinals in a 70-35 win over IKM-Manning.

Jack Vanfossen, Underwood

The senior had 20 points, 13 rebounds, six assists and three steals for the Eagles in an 80-41 victory over Audubon. Vanfossan made seven of his nine shots for Class 2A No. 5 Underwood, now 16-0.

Kaden VanRegenmorter, Hull Western Christian

The junior, a returning all-stater, tossed in 20 points for the Class 2A second-ranked Wolfpack in a 75-53 win over an 11-win Orange City Unity Christian squad.
