Iowa high school boys basketball top stars, best performances (2/5/2024)

Here are some stars from the past week's high school boys basketball games across Iowa.

Gavin Anderson, Clear Lake

The senior scored 19 points for the Class 3A top-ranked Lions in a 75-64 win over Iowa Falls-Alden. Anderson was 7-for-10 from the floor and shared team scoring honors with Dylan Litzel as Clear Lake moved to 17-0.

Holden Arnaman, West Branch

The senior headed to Division II Minnesota State scored 27 points as the Bears beat Iowa City Regina, 55-49, to snap the Regals’ 13-game winning streak. Arnaman poured in a school-record 48 points against Durant last week.

Ben Bockman, Decorah

The senior fired in 27 points for the once-beaten and Class 3A fifth-ranked Vikings as they picked up a 90-44 interstate win over Chatfield, Minnesota. Bockman hit six of seven from beyond the 3-point arc.

Mason Costello, Waukee

The senior had 21 points and four assists for the Class 4A fifth-ranked Warriors in an 85-56 win over Indianola. Costello was 9-for-13 from the field.

Camden Davis, Hudson

The senior became Hudson’s all-time leading scorer with a 21-point effort in a win over Center Point-Urbana. Davis is also the school’s all-time leading rebounder, and he broke the previous record held by Jason Bauer, who went on to play at the University of Iowa. Davis has 1,373 career points.

Kareem Earl, Iowa City West

The senior scored a team-high 15 points and converted a key three-point play in the closing seconds as the Class 4A Trojans clipped No. 8 Cedar Falls, 45-43.

Danyal Fothergill, North Union

The 6-foot-3 senior had 22 points, five rebounds, five steals and three blocked shots for the Class 1A eighth-ranked Warriors in a 78-45 victory over Eagle Grove. North Union is 18-2 on the season.

Luke Frazell, Waverly-Shell Rock

The 6-foot-6 senior guard had 29 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double in the Class 3A third-ranked Go-Hawks’ 83-51 victory over Mason City. Frazell was 12 of 18 from the field with five 3-pointers and also had three steals.

Jude Gibson, Ballard

The sophomore came close to a triple-double in the Bombers’ 76-63 victory over Gilbert. Gibson finished with 22 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists.

Fitzy Grant, Sioux City East

The senior just missed a double-double with 24 points and nine rebounds as the Black Raiders won at Waukee, 68-53. The victory vaulted East to No. 4 in the Class 4A rankings and Grant posted 19 points and 14 rebounds in a win over Sergeant Bluff-Luton two nights later.

Easton Jacobson, West Lyon

The junior made all six of his shots and four of five free throws, scoring a team-high 17 points for the Class 2A top-ranked Wildcats in a 76-51 victory over Boyden-Hull.

Carson Johnson, Ankeny

The senior poured in 38 points, leading the Hawks to a 76-63 victory over city rival Centennial. Johnson missed the team’s previous game because of stitches in his left thumb.

Davis Kern, Linn-Mar

The 6-foot-8 junior scored 32 points and grabbed nine rebounds in a 77-38 win over Cedar Rapids Washington. Kern, averaging 23.4 points per game, went over 1,000 for his career last week.

Trevan Krumrei, Cedar Rapids Kennedy

Krumrei scored 18 points, leading the Class 4A top-ranked and unbeaten Cougars to a 60-43 victory over defending state champion West Des Moines Valley. Kennedy has won 36 consecutive regular season games.

Hudson Lorensen, ADM

The sophomore hit for 22 points for the Class 3A second-ranked Tigers in an 81-56 win over Gilbert. Lorensen made four 3-pointers and all six of his free throw attempts.

Eli Menke, Lake Mills

The senior nailed six 3-pointers and scored 23 points, leading the Class 1A fifth-ranked Bulldogs (18-1) to an 86-46 victory over Forest City. Menke also had six rebounds, four assists and three steals.

Carter Putney, Carroll Kuemper

The 6-2 senior had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, helping the 16-2 Knights down Shenandoah, 87-42.

Preston Reis, Monticello

The senior scored 30 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and dished our five assists as the Class 2A fifth-ranked Panthers topped Maquoketa 72-55. Reis will play football at the University of Iowa.

Amani Robinson, Waterloo Columbus

Sophomore Robinson, already a second-year starter, had his first career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, in a 55-49 win over Waterloo East.

Toryn Severson, Madrid

The junior finished with 24 points, seven rebounds and three assists for the Class 1A second-ranked Tigers in a 71-33 win over Interstate 35 on Friday. That came one night after Severson hit for 30 points against Glidden-Ralston.

Curtis Stinson Jr., West Des Moines Valley

Stinson, just returning to action after missing several games because of an injury, scored 17 points and grabbed five rebounds for the third-ranked and defending 4A state champion Tigers in a 67-48 win over Ankeny.

Sawyer Stout, Keota

The senior tossed in 24 points, helping the unbeaten and Class 1A sixth-ranked Eagles to an 83-40 win over Cardinal. Keota moved to 19-0 on the season.

Jack Vanfossan, Underwood

The senior charted a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds as the unbeaten and fourth-ranked (Class 2A) Eagles beat Tri-Center, 59-47.

Drew Wagner, Waterloo Christian

The senior tossed in 29 points, helping the Regents roll to a 90-56 rout of Riceville. Sophomore Eli Evans scored 16 of his 19 points in the second half for Waterloo Christian.

Jacob Williams, Dubuque Senior

The senior posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Class 4A No. 7 Rams in a 50-36 win over Cedar Rapids Xavier. Williams tacked on two steals and a blocked shot.

Luke Winkel, Ankeny Centennial

Although Centennial lost to Ankeny, 76-63, Winkel flourished with a 37-point outburst for the Jaguars. He has scored 30 or more points against Ankeny the last three times he has faced the Hawks.
