SBLive's Minnesota high school boys basketball Power 25 (Jan. 16)

1. Chanhassen (14-1)

Last Week: 1

Although the Lightning may have lost their shutout streak, they have also only allowed two goals in their last six games. They dispatched both of their opponents this last week with relative ease, and have continued to impress as the current best team in the state for back-to-back weeks.

2. Wayzata (12-1-1)

Last week: 2

Retaining their second place spot from last week, the Trojans held down their rank after shutting out both of their weekly opponents. They are hot on Chanhassen's trail, and face a big test against Warroad on Friday.

3. Minnetonka (12-2)

Last week: 4

In three games, the Skippers defeated Eastview, Buffalo and Duluth East, all by considerable margins. Factor in the fact that their only two losses are to the two teams above them on this list, Minnetonka deserves third place this week.

4. Maple Grove (12-2-1)

Last Week: 3

The Crimson’s ten game winning streak was finally snapped this past Saturday after they tied Rogers 3-3. They still haven’t lost since December 3, but nonetheless, will drop to fourth.

5. Edina (10-3-1)

Last Week: 5

After tying Lakeville South and snapping their eight game win streak, the Hornets bounced back nicely, securing a ranked win against St. Thomas Academy, and they defeated Buffalo 5-2. After a rough start, Edina has rooted themselves back in the top five for consecutive weeks.

6. Cretin-Derham Hall (11-4-1)

Last Week: 6

After wins over Mahtomedi and Mounds View, Cretin has kept up with their fervent pace of winning so far this new year. They will face a tough test against Gentry this week, and will look to potentially crack the top five after this game.

7. White Bear Lake (11-2)

Last Week: 7

Despite the stagnant nature of this list so far, White Bear has done its job, netting two wins over East Ridge and Park of Cottage Grove. The problem is that no one is losing ahead of it, so despite its 11-2 record, it will remain at No. 7 for the week.

8. Warroad (14-0)

Last Week: 9

The highest ranked Class 1A team on this list, Warroad has compiled devastating offense, suffocating defense and a presence in net all in works to a perfect 14-0 record. Odds are, the Warriors can play with anyone on this list, and will have their chance to prove themselves against No. 2 Wayzata on Friday.

9. Hermantown (10-1-1)

Last Week: 10

The Hawks lost their contest with Warroad by a final score of 1-3. However, they kept this game close, which shows they can contend with anyone in the state and justifies their place in the top 10.

10. Rogers (9-2-3)

Last Week: 11

With a state leading three ties, Rogers has had a unique record, but has shown up as of late, tying rival and top ranked Maple Grove 3-3. After a few mid season hiccups, the Royals have found their stride.

11. St. Thomas Academy (10-5)

Last Week: 8

The Cadets continued their slight slump, splitting their two games with a win against Hill-Murray and a loss to top ranked Edina. Their strength of schedule may be difficult, but they need to win against more ranked opponents to stay afloat in the top 10.

12. Andover (10-5-1)

Last Week: 12

Since suffering a crushing 1-4 loss to Maple Grove, the Huskies have roared back with a vengeance. They’ve won three straight by a combined score of 23-4, and senior forward Gavyn Thoreson alone has outscored their opponents.

13. Mahtomedi (10-3)

Last Week: 17

After defeating Hastings, Tartan and upsetting Benilde-St. Margaret's, Mahtomedi reached double digit wins and improved its stock on this list. Their game against Benilde-St. Margaret's was highlighted by seniors Jonny Grove and David Wolsfeld, who each scored two goals in the winning effort.

14. Benilde-St. Margaret’s (10-5)

Last Week: 16

The Red Knights' week of action saw them win two and lose one, improving to 10-5 on the year. Despite their recent loss to Mahtomedi, the Red Knights have still won six of their last seven, and their hot streak will lift them up to 14th this week.

15. Orono (11-2)

Last Week: 24

As the season has progressed, Orono has cemented their legitimacy, with their only losses being to Warroad and Chanhassen, two top 10 teams. As a result, they will stay in the Power 25 until further notice.

16. New Ulm (11-1-1)

Last Week: 15

With a lackluster schedule in terms of ranked teams thus far, New Ulm has done what they can record wise, but getting upset by Detroit Lakes keeps it bogged down on this list.

17. Stillwater (8-4-1)

Last Week: 13

The Ponies have fallen on hard times lately, losing two in a row to rival school Mounds View and recently ranked Roseville. Until they regain their stride, Stillwater will dip a few spots until further notice.

18. Centennial (8-4-1)

Last Week: 20

Centennial fell to Andover and beat Blaine, which seemed to be the most likely outcome of its two games this past week. It will face No. 10 Rogers on Saturday with a chance to work its way up into the middle of this list.

19. Gentry Academy (10-4)

Last Week: 23

While Gentry Academy has continued to accumulate one of the better records in 2A, its strength of schedule doesn’t warrant them a spot any higher in these rankings. However, it will have an opportunity to show it belongs with the big dogs against Cretin-Derham Hall tonight.

20. Lakeville South (7-4-1)

Last Week: 14

The Panthers took care of business against Farmington and Eagan but suffered a surprising loss to Rosemount, and they drop a few places in the rankings as a result. However, make no mistake, any team that can skate with Edina deserves some credit.

21. Roseville (10-5-1)

Last Week: 24

After a surprising ranked victory over Stillwater, Roseville has continued to show why it belongs on this list. The Silver Foxes will have a matchup against similarly ranked Park of Cottage Grove on Thursday with an opportunity for either team to climb a few spots higher.

22. Champlin Park (10-4)

Last Week: 19

Losing a tough string of games against ranked teams Centennial and Rogers, Champlin Park got back on track by defeating Elk River/Zimmerman 6-3. One of its biggest challenges of the season will be on Wednesday, where they face highly ranked Benilde-St. Margaret's.

23. Park of Cottage Grove (11-5)

Last Week: 21

Park of Cottage Grove hurt its ranking slightly this past week after being shut out against White Bear Lake and losing by seven goals. Nonetheless, its record is still indicative of the success they’ve had so far this year, and it will remain in the Power 25 for another week.

24. Woodbury (9-4-1)

Last Week: 25

The Royals shut out both of their opponents this last week thanks to senior goalies Zach Stokes and Kam Carlson. They have played consistently solid hockey all year, and they will face a tough test against White Bear Lake on Thursday.

25. Eastview (9-5)

Last Week: 18

Rounding out this list is the Lightning, who played a staggering four games since their last ranking. They won two and lost two, getting shut out in their losses against Minnetonka and Lakeville North but also defeating Apple Valley and Shakopee. While it’s hard to this gauntlet against them, their record has dipped below many of the teams on this list, and so has their ranking.
