J.T. Schnoor's three-run bomb helps Resurrection edge Taylorsville in 1A South Playoff series clincher

The Eagles advanced to the MHSAA 1A South State Championship, where they'll face the Ethel Tigers

TAYLORSVILLE — Resurrection’s first hit couldn’t have come at a better time.

J.T. Schnoor hit a three-run homer in the top of the sixth and that would springboard the Eagles to a 10-2 win over Taylorsville in the decisive Game 3 of their MHSAA Class 1A Third Round playoff series on Monday night.

Resurrection (30-5) will face Ethel for the Class 1A South State Championship beginning on Friday at Ethel.

“We’ve been struggling at the plate the last two games and fortunate for us one swing made a difference,” said Resurrection coach Johnny Olsen. “J.T. did a great job with the breaking ball and sat back and put a good swing on it.”

Taylorsville jumped to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning on a throwing error and a wild pitch.

The score stayed the same until Schnoor, a Pearl River CC signee, hit the three-run homer to left center to give the Eagles a 3-2 lead.

“Coming to the plate I knew I had to do something big,” Schnoor said. “Threw me curve cause I struck out on it the at-bay before and he hung it and I put a good swing on it. It was awesome.”

Resurrection tacked on seven runs in the top of the seventh highlighted by a two-run single by Luke Schnoor to take the 10-2 lead.

Connor Davis had two hits to lead the Eagles offensively.

“This is what a Game 3 was about and our guys found a way,” Olsen said. “Joe pitched well enough for us to win and now we move on to Ethel.”

Scarborough (7-0), a East Mississippi CC signee, got the win on the mound tossing a completely game allowing just three hits, two runs and struck out six.

“I texted him last night and said this wasn’t going be our last game,” Schnoor said. “Joe grew up tonight and pitched a helluva game.”

Noah Westbrook (3-3), who had a no-hitter going into the sixth inning, took the loss despite striking out 11 batters. The Tartars finish the season 20-9.

“Noah competed his tail off tonight and the ball didn’t fall our way tonight,” said Taylorsville coach Laine Jordan. “We will regroup in the offseason and try to make it back next year.”
