CBC and Liberty North will battle for Missouri Class 6 football championship

The CBC Cadets and Liberty North Eagles will face off at 7 p.m. CT on Saturday in the Missouri Class 6 football championship game at Memorial Stadium in Columbia.

Two-time reigning Class 6 champion CBC is back in the title game for the third straight season seeking its third straight championship, fifth title in seven years and sixth in 10 seasons under coach Scott Pingel.

Liberty North is back in the championship game for the second time in three seasons and is seeking its first title. The Eagles are very familiar with CBC, having lost to the Cadets 48-21 in the 2021 championship game and then 46-21 in the rematch in last year's semifinals at home.

CBC (11-2)

The Cadets have won eight straight games since a Week 5 loss to rival De Smet. They defeated Francis Howell, the 2022 Class 5 champion, 28-27 in the District 2 title game on a stopped 2-point conversion late, beat Jackson in the quarterfinals and then rallied late to defeat De Smet 31-28 in the semifinals to advance to the championship game for the third straight year.  

Pingel's squad is averaging 40.8 points per game and allowing 22.8. 

Offensively, the Cadets are averaging 441 yards per game – 222.2 passing yards and 218.8 rushing – with a balanced offensive attack. 

Senior wide receiver Jeremiah McClellan, an Ohio State commit, has 1,296 total yards (782 receiving, 400 rushing and 114 passing) and 26 touchdowns (13 receiving, 11 rushing and two passing) in 10 games after missing three playoffs games with a foot injury. 

Senior Cole McKey (1,535 passing yards with 21 touchdowns and seven interceptions) and junior Jason Wiley (1,152 passing yards with seven touchdowns and two interceptions) have split time at the quarterback spot.

Sophomore running back Alex Morris (984 rushing yards, seven touchdowns) and junior AJ Johnson (529 rushing yards, 12 touchdowns) have led the ground game. 

Junior wide receiver Corey Simms, a Division I prospect, has 77 receptions for 1,017 yards and has scored 13 total touchdowns. 

The Cadets' defense has been led by senior outside linebacker Anthony Moore (101 tackles, three sacks, one interception), junior outside linebacker Lance Walker (83 tackles, four sacks), junior strong safety Zakiese Smith (70 tackles, eight interceptions) and junior defensive end Tristan Abram (62 tackles, five sacks).

Liberty North (12-1)

The Eagles are 35-4 since the start of the 2021 season – with two of those losses to CBC – and advanced to the title game with a 28-27 overtime win over Rockhurst in the semifinals. 

Coach Andy Lierman's squad is averaging 36.9 points per game and allowing 12.9 per contest this season. Liberty North is averaging 387.2 total yards per game – 199.9 rushing and 187.2 passing. 

Junior quarterback Tillman Martin, a first-year starter, has passed for 2,434 yards and 28 touchdowns (with four interceptions). 

Senior running back Micah Jo Barnett has rushed for 1,208 yards and 19 total touchdowns, while senior running back Jacorey Love, a Southeast Missouri State pledge, has rushed for 810 yards and 12 total touchdowns. 

Senior wide receiver Keelan Smith, a Nebraska commit, has 70 receptions for 1,135 yards and 15 touchdowns. 

The Eagles' defense is led by senior inside linebacker and four-year starter Melvin Laster Jr., a UNLV pledge who has 90 tackles, five sacks, one interception and one fumble recovery, and 6-foot-4, 230-pound senior outside linebacker Jay Ross, a Power-5 Division I prospect who has 37 tackles, 13 sacks and three forced fumbles. 

Senior strong safeties Trey Snyder (55 tackles, six interceptions) and Cole Young (51 tackles, five interceptions) have combined for 11 interceptions. Snyder has pledged to play baseball at the University of Tennessee.
