Bishop Gorman loses to Durango, missing Nevada state tournament for first time since 2008

Durango advances to play Liberty, which beat Bishop Gorman in the state championship game last year

Bishop Gorman has owned Nevada high school boys basketball for the past decade, but for the second straight year the Gaels' season has ended without a state championship.

After a nine-year run winning state titles, Bishop Gorman lost last year's state championship game to Liberty in overtime.

On Thursday night, the Gaels lost 63-55 to Durango in a Class 5A Southern League semifinal, failing to reach the state tournament for the first time since 2008.

The two Bishop Gorman slayers, Durango and Liberty, will play at 5 p.m. Saturday for the 5A Southern League championship.

The Gaels had a young team this year and appear well positioned to start a new championship streak next year.

This year they were led by the dynamic junior backcourt duo of Jase Richardson (ESPN No. 37), son of former NBA Slam Dunk Contest champion Jason Richardson, and point guard John "Juni" Mobley (ESPN No. 32), along with 6-foot-7 sophomore forward Chris Nwuli (ESPN's No. 17 in 2025).

Bishop Gorman played a national schedule per usual, including advancing to the semifinals of the Les Schwab Invitational in Oregon, losing to Duncanville (Texas).
