Crash. Boom.

The boys 110-meter high hurdles race was anything but clean and smooth.

But nothing was going to distract Micah Perry.

The Barlow sophomore was totally focused on winning the race, and that’s exactly what he did.

Despite all that was going on right next to him, Perry ran to victory in the 110 high hurdles at the Oregon 6A Track and Field Showcase, held Saturday at Pioneer Memorial Stadium in Oregon City.

“It means a lot to me. Being only a sophomore, it’s really big to come and win the state meet, and it feels really good,” Perry said. “I just kept on pushing. There were people right next to me, and it’s hard when there’s a bunch of noise, but I just focused and powered through.”

Even Perry didn’t have a clean race.

“I had some bumps in the middle. I clipped a few hurdles, and that slowed me down quite a bit, but otherwise, I did pretty good,” he said.

Perry won in a time of 14.62 seconds.

“I was just really happy. I was glad that I was able to finish the race and win the state title,” he said. “A lot of people were hitting hurdles in this race. It’s the second day, and people are getting tired. My time wasn’t as good as yesterday, but it was still good, and I’m proud of myself.”

Perry, being just a sophomore, is already looking ahead to more success in the future.

“I want to win again next year,” he said. “That’s the goal.”

Ida B. Wells junior Nolan Malcomson finished second in the 110 high hurdles in 14.90. West Linn junior Adam Maxwell was third at 14.93, and Grant junior Caden McIlhenny was fourth with a time of 15.28.
