LA MESA, Calif. -- Mater Dei Catholic was either tied or trailing after each of the first five periods on Wednesday night, but the Crusaders put their foot on the gas in the second overtime session and held off Helix in the first round of the San Diego Section Division 1 playoffs, 76-70. Senior guard KJ Gonzalez was the key for the Crusaders in the second half, scoring 20 of his 29 points after halftime. Sophomore Josiah Jefferson stepped up for Mater Dei Catholic alongside Gonzalez, scoring 17 of his 21 points in the second half. Markees Williams did all he could for Helix, finishing with 25 points.
