Georgia high school football player died Monday night after a medical emergency suffered during a game.

Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools said in a press release Tuesday the incident took place during a Windsor Forest High School (Georgia) junior varsity game, after the player had subbed out of the game.

Medical staff underwent immediate life-saving measures like CPR and AED and continued those efforts while the player was transported to Memorial Children's Hospital in Savannah.

The name of the student was not released, nor was a cause of death. The school is offering counselors for students and faculty on Tuesday.

Here is the district's full press release, as published by WJCL-22 in Savannah, Georgia:

"It is with great sadness that Savannah-Chatham County Public School administrators can confirm the loss of one of our students. A student-athlete with the Windsor Forest High School Junior Varsity team suffered a medical emergency on the sideline of a game Monday night, October 2, 2023. The student had played earlier in the game, but had been rotated out of the lineup and was watching from the sideline when the incident occurred.

Trainers and EMS staff on site began immediate life-saving measures using CPR and an AED. Those efforts continued during transport to the hospital for further medical attention. Unfortunately, the student was pronounced deceased a short time after reaching Memorial Children’s Hospital. Our deepest sympathies go out to the student’s family and friends.

SCCPSS has no information on the cause of the student’s death. Counselors and school social workers will be on site at Windsor Forest High School today to provide counseling to any student or staff member who seeks to speak with someone."
