Here are the candidates for SBLive’s North Carolina High School Athlete of the Week for May 15-20 as nominated by fans, readers and SBLive’s staff. Read through the nominees and cast your vote at the bottom of the page. Voting will conclude on Sunday and the winner will be announced Monday, May 22. Akala Garrett, Albemarle, Girls Track and Field

There’s no such thing as perfection, right? Well, Garrett came real close as she finished her high school career in the 1-A state meet. She won three individual events and was on a winning relay team. In the process, Garrett set 1-A state records in all four events. Her time of 13.52 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles broke a 22-year-old record. Her time in the 300-meter hurdles, 40.26 seconds, set a 1-A state record and is the No. 1 time in the country this season. Garrett also set a state record in the 200-meter dash and was on the record-setting 4x400 relay.

Zoe Dorsey, Terry Sanford, Girls Track and Field

Dorsey won a pair of 3-A state championships, sweeping to victory in the 400 meters and 800 meters for the Bulldogs.

Izzi Hammond, Cardinal Gibbons, Girls Lacrosse

Hammond scored four goals and was named MVP as the Crusaders beat Charlotte Catholic 15-11 to win their second consecutive 4-A state championship.

Arizona Blankenship, Swain County, Girls Track and Field

Blankenship, a sophomore won the 1,600 meter run and the 3,200 meter run by wide margins in the 1-A state meet. She was also second in the 800 meter run.

Anderson Nance, Morehead, Baseball

Nance fired a two-hitter with 10 strikeouts and no walks as the Panthers ended Randleman’s two-year run as 2-A state champions with a 5-0 win in the fourth round of the playoffs.

Ethan Byerly, South Davidson, Boys Track and Field

Byerly, a junior, won the 800-meter state championship in the 1-A meet. He was also on the Wildcats’ 4x800 relay, which finished third.

Olivia Terry, Dixon, Girls Soccer

Terry scored the lone goal in the Bulldogs’ 1-0 win over Currituck County in the second round of the 3-A state playoffs. The senior midfielder/forward leads Dixon with 27 goals.

Tyler Baughn, Community School of Davidson, Girls Soccer

Baughn got the goal as Spartans stunned previously undefeated West Davidson 1-0 in the second round of the 2-A state playoffs. It was just third goal scored against West Davidson the entire season. It was the 55th goal of the season for Baughn, who is a junior.

Carter Brown, Uwharrie Charter, Baseball

Brown’s walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth inning lifted the Eagles to a 5-4 win over Draughn in the fourth round of the 1-A state playoffs.

Mia Zulueta, Hickory, Girls Soccer

Zulueta scored all three goals as Hickory beat Central Cabarrus 3-0 in the second round of the 3-A state playoffs. The Red Tornadoes advanced to the third round for the first time since 2015. Zulueta, a sophomore, leads Hickory with 27 goals.
