With football practices across the state beginning on July 31, New Bern finally has its next football coach.

Terrance Saxby, who spent the last nine seasons as the head coach at Hertford County, was named the Bears' new coach last week.

Saxby went 68-40 during his tenure Hertford County.

He replaces Torrey Nowell, who guided New Bern to an undefeated 16-0 record and the NCHSAA 4-A state championship last season after defeating Grimsley 40-28 in the title game.

“We are thrilled to welcome Terrance Saxby to our Bear family,” said Bo Lansche, New Bern's athletics director, in a  press release. “Their leadership, experience, and dedication to developing well-rounded athletes make them the ideal choice to guide our football program. We have complete confidence that under Coach Saxby’s guidance, our student-athletes will flourish and achieve new heights of success.”

Nowell left New Bern in late June and was recently named the coach at Durham Hillside.

Saxby is stepping into a program with strong tradition and a state championship pedigree.

In addition to last year's state title, the Bears have won state football championships in 2007, 2012 and 2014.
