Ohio's top high school baseball players: Meet the state’s best outfielders

Over the past few weeks, we've been taking a look at some of the top baseball players in Ohio.

We started with the top first basemen, next up were the catchers, then shortstops, second basemen and third basemen, and now it's the outfielders' turn.

Note: Many high school baseball players excel at multiple positions. Don't be alarmed to see a rocket-armed third baseman or an ace pitcher listed here as an outfielder, for example.

Logan Brady, Uniontown Lake, senior

Brady hit .402 with 14 RBIs and 24 runs scored for the Blue Streaks last season. A multi-sport athlete at Lake, he earned second-team all-Ohio honors in football this past season and holds a 3.9 GPA in the classroom.

Jackson Campbell, Cincinnati Country Day, senior

Was named the Cincinnati Division III player of the year in 2021 as he hit .343 with 10 doubles and scored 32 runs from the top of the order. On the mound, he was 7-2 with a 1.95 ERA and struck out 79 batters in 50 innings.

Alex Carandang, Elyria Catholic, senior

A four-year starter, he hit .500 with 26 RBIs and 35 runs scored last season while swiping 35 bases to earn first-team all-Ohio accolades as well as being named the Lorain County Division III player of the year. Offensively, he is a line-drive hitter who can go gap-to-gap and defensively gets a great read on the ball off the bat. His coach says his baseball instincts separate him from most other players, and he is an ultimate team player.

Oliver Cush, New Albany, senior

Hit .449 with 15 extra-base hits and 35 RBIs as a junior. Helped lead New Albany to the Division I state title and had a double, a triple, three walks, three RBIs and three walks combined in the state semifinal and state championship game.

Jacob Howard, Defiance, senior

The University of Findlay commit plays the outfield and pitches for Defiance. Last season, he hit .429 with 32 runs scored and 27 stolen bases. On the mound, he was 3-2 with a 1.98 ERA.

Josh Juliano, Canfield, senior

Named first-team all-Ohio in Division II last season when he hit .552 with 16 RBIs, 27 runs scored and 15 stolen bases. Was a key part of the Canfield team that went undefeated in the regular season and made it to the regional semifinals.

Alex Kennedy, Conneaut, senior

He hit .463 with nine doubles, 12 RBIs and 25 runs scored last season. He also pitched for Conneaut, and on the mound he had a 2.72 ERA with 56 strikeouts in 46.1 innings. He struck out 11 in the district final loss.

Max Klare, St. Xavier, senior

Hit .400 with four homers and 30 RBIs last season in being named second-team all-Ohio in Division I. The 6-foot-4 Duke University commit can play the outfield or third base.

Casey Maruniak, Hilliard Darby, senior

Hit .433 with with an on-base percentage of.523 last year. He had 12 doubles, five triples and 31 RBIs as a middle-of-the-order run producer. He did all of that while playing the season with a separated shoulder, which led his coach to call him “a tremendous competitor.”

Lucas Moore, Badin, junior

Named first-team all-Ohio in Division II last season, hitting .458 with 12 doubles, 21 RBIs, 48 runs scored and 51 stolen bases. The University of Kentucky commit helped lead Badin to the state semifinals.

Ashton Newton, Cloverleaf, senior

The Wittenberg University commit hit .467 with seven doubles, 17 RBIs and 26 runs scored last season. The versatile left-handed hitter can play the outfield or move in and play middle infield.

Dennis Ritlinger-Nirider, Grove City, senior

Was named honorable mention all-Ohio last season in Division I. He hit .370 with 18 RBIs and 24 runs scored. The left-handed captain can also toe the rubber for the Greyhounds.

Dylon Robinson, Wynford, junior

The center fielder hit .415 with nine doubles and 33 RBIs last season as a sophomore and struck out just out five times in 105 plate appearances. When needed, he stepped in to play shortstop. His coach says he is a “baseball junkie who is always working on his game.”

Devin Taylor, Cincinnati LaSalle, senior

The Indiana University commit hit .322 and was named first-team All-Greater Catholic League-South despite playing in limited games due to injury. As a freshman in 2019, he was named the GCL-South Player of the Year with a .443 batting average and a league-high 30 RBIs.

Nick Thoman, Elyria Catholic, senior

Was named first-team all-Great Lakes Conference and first-team all-Lorain County last season by hitting .408 with three triples and 24 runs scored. Like teammate Alex Carandang, Thoman is a line-drive hitter on offense who can go gap-to-gap and gets a great read on the ball off the bat in the field. Also like Carandang, his coach says his baseball instincts separate him from most other players, and he is an ultimate team player.

Gabe Tingle, Ridgewood, senior

Earned honorable mention all-Ohio honors last season, as he hit .379 with six doubles and three triples. On the base paths, he stole 25 bases and scored 38 runs. His coach says “Gabe has the ability to run down any ball hit to any gap or field. He is extremely athletic, with a strong arm.”

Jake Tschida, Roger Bacon, senior

Has been a starter since stepping on the diamond for Roger Bacon as a freshman, a season in which the Spartans went to the state semifinals. Last year, he hit .373 with four homers and a school-record nine triples. A three-sport athlete who also plays basketball and football, his coach says Tschida “has quickness, speed, power and a high baseball IQ. He is a great student, athlete, human all-around. He is a great teammate, unselfish and takes care of business.”

Jack Vogele, Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy, senior

Hit .495 last season with an on-base percentage of .583. He had 13 doubles, three triples and drew 21 walks in helping lead CHCA to the Division III state title. When on the bases, he stole 33 bases and came around to score 48 runs. He started this season off even better, hitting over .600 in the season’s first few weeks. He is a versatile player who can also play second base, third base or pitch.

Lucas Winters, Lakewood, junior

He hit .458 with four doubles, three triples and 18 RBIs last season. A two-sport athlete, Winters will be attending St. Francis University in Pennsylvania to play football. His coach calls him “a tireless worker, wonderful role model and leader for each player in our program and a wonderful, coachable player.”

Ben Yoder, Marlington, senior

Yoder drove in 10 runs and scored 16 last season for the Dukes. The Hiram College commit makes his presence felt the most defensively, where he didn’t commit a single error in center field as a junior. Coach Cody Jones, who has played and coached at Marlington for 20 years, says Yoder is “flat-out one of the best defensive center fielders we have had at Marlington.”
