The Marshfield boys won their first OSAA state track and field championship since 2017 on Saturday, edging Henley by five points at Hayward Field in Eugene despite winning only one event.

The Pirates scored more than one-third of their 57 points in Friday’s pole vault, with sophomore Jonathan Parks leading a 1-3-4 finish. They needed just a seventh-place finish in the meet’s final event, the 1,600-meter relay, and cemented the program’s fourth all-time title with a third-place finish.

The Hornets, bidding for their first title since going back-to-back in 2015-16, won the 4x400, and senior Eli Hayes added the triple jump title to the long jump he won Friday.

Siuslaw finished third and Mazama fourth to make the podium. Vikings senior Brandon Gailey won athlete of the meet honors with his victories in the 100 and 200, and senior Savien Burk won the 300 hurdles.

Phoenix senior Elwood Hosking added the 800 title Saturday to the 3,000 he won Friday. Other winners Saturday were Philomath’s Micah Matthews (110 hurdles), Corbett’s Cole Parker (400), Valley Catholic’s Henry Tierney (1,500), Cottage Grove’s Isaac Stere (high jump) and Junction City’s Colby Evans (javelin).
