Oregon State Beavers lose first commit following Jonathan Smith's departure

Jonathan Smith accepted the Michigan State head coaching job Saturday

The Oregon State Beavers have experienced a tough weekend.

After losing to the Oregon Ducks on Friday, head coach Jonathan Smith announced his departure for the same position with the Michigan State Spartans.

The fallout of that decision was felt almost immediately.

Just hours later, Gaither (Florida) three-star athlete Andrew Brinson IV announced his decommitment from the Beavers.

"I want to say thank you to Oregon State, the coaches, the players and all the fans," he wrote. "It was a pleasure being a part of Oregon State and all the time I spent up there. But due to circumstances I have to announce I am decommitting and will be reopening my recruitment up. Thank you to everyone who has helped me through this. God has a plan."

The 6-foot-1, 175-pound athlete originally committed to Oregon State in June, choosing the Beavers over offers from Georgia Tech, Illinois, Iowa State, Louisville, North Carolina State, Purdue, Utah and others.

Overall, Oregon State's 2024 recruiting class is ranked No. 61 nationally.
