Dillon Gabriel enters transfer portal; Oklahoma Sooners star quarterback on the move

Oklahoma Sooners senior quarterback Dillon Gabriel announced Monday that he had entered his name into the NCAA's transfer portal.

The 5-foot-11, 205-pound signal-caller immediately becomes one of the hottest names on the market after throwing for 3,660 yards, 30 touchdowns and just six interceptions with 373 yards and 12 scores rushing this fall:

"The past 2 years here at OU as a Sooner I have made memories with friends and family that remind me how blessed I am," Gabriel posted to social media. "I have been able to play football for an amazing group of coaches and alongside men who have become my brothers. More than anything I have grown in faith and love. I appreciate and cherish these memories and relationships forever. My time in The Palace was a game time experience I will never forget. Sooner Nation, you held me accountable and I am better for it. Coach (Brent Venables), my coaches, and the football staff, I am grateful for your care, knowledge and insight. Most of all, thanks for your faith in me and the opportunity to lead and be a member of OU's team 128 and 129." 

According to On3, Mississippi State, Oregon and and USC have already emerged as the primary contenders for Gabriel's services. 

Mississippi State recently hired Oklahoma offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby as its head coach, while Oregon (Bo Nix) and USC (Caleb Williams) are considered "hot spots" to land a transfer after turning their last transfer quarterbacks into potential NFL first-round draft picks.

Other notable quarterback names in the transfer portal include Washington State's Cam Ward, Ohio State's Kyle McCord, Oregon State's Aidan Chiles and D.J. Uiagalelei and UCLA's Dante Moore. 

For Oklahoma, Gabriel's departure clears the way for freshman quarterback Jackson Arnold to take the reins of the offense.

The 6-foot-1, 214-pound signal-caller came to Norman as a five-star recruit in the class of 2023 and has lived up to expectations thus far.
