Ava Brown, Montgomery Lake Creek dominate New Braunfels Canyon in Texas (UIL) 5A softball state title

Brown tossed 15 strikeouts and allowed one hit; Florida signee steals show for second straight year

Ava Brown delivered a 15-strikeout one-hitter to lead Montgomery Lake Creek, the nation's No. 1 team, to an 8-0 win over New Braunfels Canyon in the Texas (UIL) state high school softball championship on Saturday.

Just last like year, the Florida signee and one of the nation's top high school players delivered again in the season's biggest moment. She struck out the side four separate times and kept complete command in the circle.

She opened the game with an RBI double to drive in the game's first run and ended the game by retiring Markaylee Maldonado, Dee Dee Baldwin and star senior Haley Carmona.

The Lions led 1-0 for three innings until their bats came alive in the fourth. They scored two runs and followed it up with three in the fifth and two more in the sixth.

Canyon only got on base twice — a walk on its first at-bat and a single in the sixth inning.

In 2022, Lake Creek defeated Georgetown 7-0 in the 5A championship game en route to posting a 40-0 record on the season for its first-ever state championship. Brown pitched a one-hit shutout and had a perfect game in the first five innings had the game's only extra base hit.
