Magnolia West survives final out scare, beats Argyle for first Texas (UIL) 5A state baseball title
By the grace of Jackson Blank's glove — and bat — Magnolia West is hoisting its first state baseball trophy.
With two runners on and two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Blank's out-stretched effort reeled in right-center field reeled didn't just preserve the Mustangs' 3-2 win over Argyle in the Texas (UIL) Class 5A state baseball championship at Dell Diamond in Round Rock.
It also prevented Argyle's base-runners on second and third from scoring the tying and winning run — thus holding off a furious comeback in the game's final out on Saturday.
The tying run, Argyle junior Colton Roquemore, came to the plate with two outs and runners on first and third and drove in Argyle's first run with an RBI single to right field.
Argyle scored its first run of the game facing a three-run deficit with two outs left in the final inning. With two runners in scoring position, Argyle flew out to right field and the Mustangs' dogpile ensued.
Senior Caylon Dygert got the win on the mound with a complete start where he gave up five hits, no earned runs, two walks and struck out five.
Blank was named the game's MVP. In addition to securing the final out, he went 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBI on a single to right-center that put the first three runs on the board in the top of the sixth.
